TC, you might want to identify the year and country you SR was produced for. Seems like every time I answer a question from my narrow (USA) perspective, it turns out that the questionner is from somewhere that imported SR's beyond the 1978-81 period they came into the US. And, there were changes to those SR's that I have no way of knowing about.
As for grease nipples, you should be able to install grease nipples at any time on your swingarm. The trick is to drill the hole in the area the bearing isn't -- that is, any place toward the center of the swingarm pivot beyond the bearing end. My swingarm is equipped with a grease nipple, it's on the right hand side of the pivot, about a 1.5 to 2 inches from the right edge, located at 1 o'clock as you view it on the bike witih the swing arm horizontal. You will be able to see, and service the nipple with a grease gun easily in that position.
As for actually drilling and tapping the swingarm pivot, you want to do that with the swingarm out of the bike, the bearings out of the swingarm and the pivot clean to prevent metal shavings from getting into the bearings and un-doing your refurbish work. When it's all done and the swingarm is reassembled, pump grease into the pivot until it start to ooze out of both sides.
If you need to see a photo, email me (see my profile for address) and I'll send you some.
