I have two 78 SR 500's and they both have bent side stands. I assume that this is a common problem. Both of the SR stands were bent before I obtained them. Perhaps they are getting worse.
My XT 500, a 79 has a tubular stand, it is fine. Has anyone fabricated a tubular side stand for their SR? Any tricks noted?
I thought that I would get some 4130 in the same ID as the OD of the existing stand at the top. Chop it off the Yamaha leg pound the new one over it and weld it on.

I have never made one for a SR but did have to shorten the TT sidestand when I used that frame for a SR. I wouldn't think you would need anything more than mild steel. 1" should be large enough. The way I would do it is to remove the stock SR stand, measure the distance from the pivot to the spring hook and from the pivot to the foot. Cut the 1" tube a little longer than what you will need. Cut the stock sidestand about 2" from the center of the pivot. Tap the tube over what's left and weld it in place. Take a 1/4" bolt about 1-1/2" long and round the flats on the head. Drill a hole in the tube all the way through the same distance you measured from the pivot the the spring hook. Insert the bolt to where the threaded end is flush with the opposite side of the tube and weld both sides. Remount the sidestand without the spring and check the length and angle you need for the foot. Cut the tube to that angle and length and weld a new foot on. A 1-1/2" washer would work well. Remove, paint and remount with spring.
But this is just what I'd do. ;D

Yeh I have this problem. Replaced both the side and centre-stand a couple of months ago with good used ones, am applying as little unecessary weight to them as possible because their bending is such a pain, and already they're both bending out of shape again! I'm thinking that a fabrication of something stronger in both cases is a great idea. (Although in the case of the centre-stand the mounts on the bike are worn which is part of the problem.) I wouldn't bother with the centre-stand but it makes hot starting at the servo so much easier! Otherwise I have both stands stowed when I kick the bike. Let us know how you go. Methinks that if somebody wants to fabricate much stronger stands they might have no worries selling them!

The sidestands for the G and H model SRs are tubular. Perhaps look around for one of them...all the newer SRs are forged. SR

I fabricated one side stand tonight.
I cut off the old one and used some .058" x 7/8" chro-mo tubing (that I have purchased for general fabrication and used to make my new bars from.). I drove it together with a hammer then welded it. A really nice fit.
It took 13" of tubing that I cut off to match the angle of the ground and I added a washer to the bottom. It folds up nicely and the stop can be modified to tuck in extremely tight when the time comes.
The standard stand weighed 1lb3.5oz" and the new one 14oz. It forms a much broader base for the bike to stand on.

Hi there, the reason for most bent side stands is because the riders use them to support the bike when starting , the center stand should be the one to use as support for starting the bike, Thumper stuff has new side stands for SR500. good luck

The stand will eventually wear out also. After 27 years heavy duty it needs a thin weld on the surface ( 1 ). Your SR will stand better, almost in balance, easy roll off will be the result !

Hi Dutchcool good point about modifying the centerstand. My third 500, still at the bikedoctor, has one. Neither my other SR, THUMPS nor my XT have a centerstand. Only a sidestand or kickstand if you prefer.
The part that bent was part #37 on your diagram. I have posted some pictures of my repair.
One think I noticed was how fast the old side stand cut though during the repair. Even though it was solid steel must have been pretty cheap stuff.
