How much valve noise should this thing make? It has a forged piston and I know that they are supposed to be a little loud, but this thing really ticks loudly. It runs great...I got it to 96mph registered on my GPS (speedo only goes to 85) but I'm worried that I'm doing some damage. Could some of you long time SR500 guys give me your impression?

Loud is relative. Depends on what you are user to. Being a aircooled 500 single, they do tend to be noisier than say a 500 twin. Lots of vibration will also make the fins ring. The only real way to tell would be to let someone hear it that knows what they should sound like. I know it's not that great of an answer but, it's really hard to tell someone without a reference point.
Also......what's this doing in the Electrical/Ignition System forum?

I guess it's relative to what you're used to..I guess my guideline would be that it shouldn't alarm you...again a relative thing. SR

Have you checked your valve clearance recently? It is a pretty mechanical sounding bike. However, when one of my SR500's suddenly developed much louder "valve noise" I checked the clearance - it was huge-.030" instead of .006". My cam-aftermarket) had eaten the follower, and the follower then ate the cam. IT WAS A REALLY LOUD ALMOST RINGING NOISE- not just the usual tap, tap, tap. Charlie

was it just rebuilt? if so, check that you haven't forgotten the damper washer next to the spring in the camchain tensioner, or, check out the message above, another common problem

I have a forged piston in my bike and believe it to be much noisier than stock, so much so that i thought something is wrong. So far so good at about 1,500 miles. The noise I liken to piston slap. The noise does not get louder as I rev the bike and compression seem fine. Hope this helps. C

If I remember correctly, a forged piston requires more clearance in the bore compared to a cast piston. Something about expansion rates ???That would account for some more noise than a stock, cast piston in a good bore.

Yes, but the material for the pistons is getting better now and the expansion rates are less...or closer to the spec of the barrel. This means that the piston to bore clearances are tightening up to figures similar to cast pistons and the engines are getting quieter again. SR

As Stew says, you can now bore safely within 3/4 of a thou diff from cast to forged, Wiseco put more silicon in their blanks some 8 years ago, JE & Ross still require a tad more clearance,Woosner recommend 3 thou and at that even the ring gaps are spot on, if the Wiseco is bored to 2 thou [as on the box] the gaps are to tight, JE are file fit rings, etc, etc, etc, could go on for hours.....better get a beer! its hot and 6pm..

Hi, if the engine is before 84 one of the big noisemakers is the worn out Rockeraxisbores. The noise starts decently and is getting worse when the oil is gettig hot. Regards Rei97
