Prod the kick lever untill the piston is at top dead center (yamaha has that little window on the right side, near the top of the engine) when the shinny metal fills the window you are at TDC. Now, pull the decompression lever in, and kick 1/2 way down slowly. Let go of the decompressor lever and let the kick start back up to the top ((highest point) it will click)) Then (no throtle) & kick as hard as you can. Good luck ! Dave

Hi,
Welcome to the site.
I'm on a dial-up service where I am at the moment, so I can't write too much...to use the kick-indicator to simplify things...
Put it on TDC against compression, then with the decompressor in carefully push the engine over until the indicator comes into the window. Release the decomp lever and let the kickstart lever come back up under spring return. Don't move the lever again until you mean to kick it over.
With no throttle and some choke...(...try half choke to start with), leaving the throttle alone until the engine catches, put your foot onto the kickstart without moving it down any further until you're ready...then kick the engine firmly all the way through to the bottom. It should catch and start.
If not do the same procedure again until it does. Vary the choke to suit...
Use the throttle as the engine catches as needed...
Let us know how you go.

Have you verified spark (by sight) and fuel (by smell)?
If you got both you should be getting a pop out of it at least.

Damm, the tension is killing me, is it running yet? Now if you're really depressed look at the video on this site of the guy starting his SR with his hands.... Damm really made me feel old, not the act of starting it that way... it would be the kickback that would end my day of riding... Good luck still Davewfc

Mine has always been hard to start but it's a lot easier now and will even start on the first or second kick after replacing the dirty corroded connectors on the voltage regulator and ignition box. The pins looked so bad I don't know how it even ran before! Now it's only hard to start when it's really hot like after driving 30 miles on the freeway at high speed because the compression seems to be so high I can't kick it over fast enough. I had to get the yearly emissions test on Monday so I could get the tags renewed again this year and I drove down to the test station 30 miles away (there isn't a test station in my county) and when I drove in they asked me to shut off the engine. I said "no thanks" and they said I should turn off the engine and I said "no, don't want to, it's hard to start". Well, they wouldn't test it because they said I had to shut off the engine so they could zero the equipment and they finally convinced me to shut it off. When they were finally ready I couldn't start it so everyone had to wait in line behind me while I kicked and kicked. I got tired and let it sit for awhile and after about 15 minutes tried it again and it started and I was able to finish the test. Those guys at the test station were so rattled at seeing a bike you have to kick start that they made mistakes on the test form and put down the wrong license number, then they had to go in the office and have it corrected before I could leave!
