i dinked with the carb for a couple days, raising the needle, because it kept feeling lean. then i went the other way. dropped the needle. much better. ran ok for a couple days, then i took the rotted out stock muffler off.
holy smokin' crap!!!
now it runs the way i expected. like a raped ape. if i leave the line even moderately hard with a tad of clutch slippage, it wants to lift the front tire. if i hit second too hard, same thing. !!!
total blast.
the seat is a shell/starracer style. i bobbed the frame up to the rear of the factory seat mounts, the welded a brace/bracket to the frame to mount the pan to. i cut about 3" of the front end of the seat to get the proportions that i wanted. it also utilizes the stock seat mount rubbers/spacers, just using thru-bolts into holes drilled into the pan.
i need to find some neoprene foam to apply directly to the pan for some padding. there's a wicked harmonic that hits you right in the coccyx at about 5700rpm... 8^)
the best part about this project, for me at least, is that i have been able to get away without buying a ton of parts. i had to buy brake pads, front wheel bearings, fork seals, and the k&n filter. the seat pan i bought used from a friend of mine that races.
i had the aluminum bars, the fork brace, the vance and hines exhaust(butchered to fit, mercilessly). the rest has been time, and tools. time's hard to get, but i do have the tools to make it all work.
next up: cutting back the fender/seat pan just a tad. i want more reveal on the rear tire. i'm looking thru some scraps i have laying around to find a small tail light. over the winter, the engine's coming out, and i am going to cut out all of the factory bracing. add a few gussets, and do a capacitor to eliminate the battery.
going to p/c the frame. it's either going to be a gaudy green with gold metalflake, or black. if i go with the green frame, the body work will be matte black with white scallops. if i go black frame, the body work will be red over white, with a black pin stripe at the breaking line. or, a yamaha racing yellow/black/white scheme.
another look that might be cool. go with a dark grey frame, and then yamaha blue tank and tail. do some of the black bars on it, with big motox YAMAHA decals on the tank.
so, yeah. lots to do. trying to keep it a rolling build, so that i can ride it if i want. then once the snow flies, i'll blow it apart and do the frame stuff.
