I joined this list last summer. I was trying to get my SR 500 ready to ride. I had it rebuilt about 15 years ago and the builder put in an ultra high compression ratio piston making it a real bit*h to run on the road. I had to use racing 109 octane gas and even that was not enough.
While it was in the shop I found another SR almost the same as mine but with a stock engine.
I rode it a couple of times and realized that the amount of rust in the tank made riding a real adventure. My wife sees this (a third) XT500 and within a week I own it as well.
Jump ahead a week and I am riding my XT and basically loving it. My #1 SR is still in the shop, My #2SR is languishing with leaking suspension. loose swingarm and rotting tires.
This past week I purchase new tires, fork seals and decide that I can fix the rear suspension with just tightening the nuts on the sides of the swingarm.
It all went together today and I have a real live rolling SR 5oo. Complete with Metzler tires, a supertrap exhaust less the disks. It sounds like the thunder that it feels like. I have a license plate THUMPS, very appropriate.
I have made some new drag bars for it as well. I used thin wall 4130 and put a single bend in them in the middle. I am planning on getting a digital replacement that has tach and speedometer.My standard units do not work. A Trail Tech Vapor is the unit that I am looking at.
My paint job really sux, it has the dark red color. with silver streaks from my tank liner treatment. Will post a picture soon.
In the mean time my old xt still keeps quietly stroking along. It will do 87 mph. at 7400 rpm. About 900 over readline.
I have an extra VTR 25o honda frame that is crying for an 500 engine.
