Hi guys and gals. I bought an SR500 new in '78, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Traded up for a bigger bike a little while later, then gave up bikes altogether when a wife and kids came along. Well, now that the kids are starting to leave I'm getting the itch for another thumper. I found a "project" bike not too far away for about 400 dollars and will probably go out to get it later this week. The ol' girl needs some TLC, and the owner tells me that the motor knocks, he thinks it needs a rebuilt crank assembly. I'm pretty handy working on cars, but have never tackled rebuilding a motorcycle engine. The biggest reason I like the SRs is their simplicity and durability. So I guess my biggest question is, how tough (and expensive) is it to replace or rebuild the bottom end on these bikes? I was excited to discover a forum devoted to these machines, and look forward to "meeting" you all. Any information (and encouragement) will be greatly appreciated!

Hi mate, Welcome to the forum. Great to see another SR owner returning to the fold ...post your questions on the appropriate areas and sit back. SR
