Hi guys, I recently bought a 79 SR500 with a horrible homemade seat on it. The guy had the best intentions but ended up creating this huge blob of a soft seat. The foam is too soft and the shape it just outrageous. I'd post a picture but I'm too embarrassed. The seat pan is in pretty bad shape so I'm considering all options for a replacement.
Has anyone actually purchased and installed any of the Airtech (http://www.airtech-streamlining.com) seats. I like the idea of a cafe seat but don't really want to go through too much custom fitting to get it to work. I see all sorts of cool seats being made and sold in Japan, but I can't even read the websites to figure out pricing or how to order one. I'm lost.
I could re-cover the seat pan that I have with a stock cover, but I still need good foam. I could go for an aftermarket pan but I don't know what kind of fitting issues I'll be dealing with.
What have other people on the board done with success?

You have a lot of options! If the seat pan is junk, toss it in the trash. Thumperstuff has a stock seat for $425.00. I think Yamaha still sells the seats, too. Try wwwknmotorcycles.com. Vanem in Australia has some VERY cool cafe seats, all for over 300 dollars AU plus shipping. Ebay has a seat from time-to-time, and there always seems to be a SR 500 seatcover. I was lucky, my pan was good, as was the foam. Just had a guy recover it. You are bound to find someone in your area that recovers cycle seats. Any good auto reupholsterer can do the job if they want to. Good luck!

I've *heard* (not done myself) that under-carpet pad in multiple layers makes a pretty good seat foam. You can spray-adhesive the layers together.

Thanks for the replies.
I guess I should have mentioned that solutions under $300 would be ideal. Hopefully my seatpan isn't junk.
I like the idea of carpet pads.
Still, has anyone on this board had any experience with Airtech fiberglass seats? Has anyone purchased a fiberglass seat that mounted to the SR fairly starightward?

I have a Ducati F1 fairing from them on my Suzuki 400 vintage racer. The gelcoat on the outside is nice and smooth and the sections fit together well. Not that a seat has more than one section. Just that the quality is there. I would definitely buy more goodies from them.

I have also been looking for a seat. I reviewed and rejected the Air-tech C-1 seat as being to narrow at 6" back from the front. It was otherwise a fit. I did not check any of their other seats (and they have a lot.) because they didn't please me ascetically. If you like any of the other Air-tech offerings, you can measure your frame and compare to what is posted on their website. I have considered making my own based on the C1 shape, but as I reviewed the issues of creating a symmetrical shape from foam... it does not look like it will be easy or cheap to get it right the first time. So I have continued to search for something. I believe I have a possible candidate in the Omar narrow cafe seat. The basic mearuments are about right and it is not ugly to me. I am still not committed to the $275.00 USD price tag , but it is gowning on me. Hey.. If you like it... you could buy it and let me know if it fits as good as I think it will ;D. This is the web link if your interested. Just joking above, a beer too many perhaps. omarsdtr.com/cafenew5.htmlPC

Could you post of the photo of the seat you are offering? I'm interested most in the condition of the seat pan. Obviously the cover's condition is important but also easily replaced.
It seems that finding a decent stock pan is the biggest challenge. I'd happily purchase a bolt on cafe seat but everything that I've seen is pretty generic and will need to be fit with modifications to the bike and the new seat, this I'm trying to avoid.

The seat pan is solid. I could try to e-mail you pictures. I don't have any posted at a photo site so I can't post them on the forum. There is a picture of the seat on the bike on my myspace account. PM me your e-mail and I'll send the myspace thing. The seat is perfectly usable as is I just changed it because it was a "1hour seat". 1 hour is all my butt could stand. Money back guarentee.

If you want, just right click on the pic in your myspace page and then copy and paste that url here between the [im g] [/im g] tags. Minus the spaces in img of course. p.s.: Put me next in line for the seat if tfisher311 backs out! ;)Thanks, G Man

Just a note to all. I bought the used seat from chew652 mentioned above. He is a class act. Easy as could be transaction. It is a great seat and will work out very well for the bike I had it planned for. Very happy! G Man

I have two SR's I'm currently putting together. I'm building up a stock seat for the first and I have to decide what I'm doing seat wise on the second. I may have a third rear trim piece that may have a crack or two in it available as well. Probably easy fix. I'll go out to my shop later and check them all out closer. G Man
