Yes I've got 2 birthdays to celebrate this year , 1 in March & 1 in August but unfortunately I'm 18 years older than them so if I was looking for something 6 years older I'd have to go to a museum! Cheers Dave.

30 years old and they are still a sharp looking bike.Yamaha sure got it right with the SR. I guess thats why they are still so popular today.

Nice paint on the 08 SR. Still looks outstanding after 30 years. I believe the original SR designer was 'Atsushi Ishiyama'. He did a great job....Happy Birthday SR

Interesting to note that the SR comes with an in-line fuel filter now and the countershaft side cover has a different set-up as far the screws go...all interesting little detail things...may have been like that for a while of course...heh, heh... The 400 has a 14 litre fuel tank as well...so if you're after more fuel range...it goes straight on. SR

Thanks for the reminder Stew!
'08 will be a significant birthday for me too - unfortunately I haven't stood up quite as well as the SR!! Matt, I bought one of the first ones in Ontario early in 1978..............about the time you came into this world. OMG.
I agree with some other comments - I'd buy another one today (and would have space in the garage for it as my wife Barb would no doubt move out?!!!) - looks great......and comes with real street tires!
Mine is bundled up for our CDN winter just now...............but spring is on it's way!!

what a sweet machine, I was a 1st year apprentice when in 1978 , 30 of 31 guys in the class rode MC's mostly Japanese stuff, one guy (who went on to succeed in A Grade Aus SBK's) rode an SR500 streetbike, we used to laugh, just didnt understand I suppose. I now have one in an inbred 89-94 RGV Supermono and it is the best bike I have ever had over 30 years. The machine lives on, we are just lucky to be a part of it's legacy. thankyou Nakamura-san, simple & reliable

Mine is 29 1/2. I went to get SI rego in Tas, only to find it's not 30 till August. Poop I say. Anyhow, decided on full rego for 6 months, then I'll convert to 1/2 price Special Interest rego in Aug.

Congratulations friends and SR's.
Mine is a '78.
And, by the way. There are only 30 SR's in Norway, registered.

I was 8 yrs old when the SR came into being!
I never knew the SR existed until around 2001, I was researching info for my '81 XS400 Special, and came across a pic of the SR. It left a lasting impression on me, because when I saw the one I have now on the side of the road for sale in Sept. of 2005, I immediately knew what it was!

Its official not a rumour I now have 5 SR500s under the same roof 3 78s & 1 80 & a 82 . 3 go 1 is getting cafed(when I can find time) & the latest is a 78 my bro found in his mates shed(I must look at the compliance to see when its birthday is). Its a poor rusty old thing but the engine goes & the numbers are matched so what do I do part it or tart it cheers Dave.
