My SR seems to be running a little rich. She smokes a little at idle but really puffs when I crack the throttle open. Taking the K&N off(no air box) helps a little. Would anyone in the midwest, running a Mikuni 36mm Roundslide, be able to give me some base settings? I've seen Curleys thread with the different set-ups and will try them as soon as my parts arrive, but the more info I have, the better. This is what I currently have:
Pilot: 35 Main: 230 Air Jet: 2.0 Slide: 3.0
The clip is in the top position of the needle.
I can only assume the needle jet and needle are what come with the carb, a Q-5 neddle jet and a 6FJ6 needle. I don't really have know the history of this bike, what has all been done and why.
Oh yeah, The bike isn't road worthy, so I can't test it under any load. Just on it's center stand in nuetral.

What color is the smoke? Also, it is virtually impossible to jet a carb without being able to load the engine. Tuning it without a load will result in it being to lean with a load.

The smoke is black. Also, soot gathers on the brake rotor after a while.
I know not being able to drive it isn't ideal, but I figure I'll get it as close as I can while I'm waiting for parts to make it drivable.

I think I would start by lowering the pilot jet. A 30 at first and if you want to, try a 25. Sounds like it may be loading up at idle.

its all about the needle jet in the VM, I should get curly to measure his with the vernier as I made/drilled his after the Dyno readings, it ran well everywhere after but I remember it was all about the needle jet, Q5 is very big, check the straight Dia of needle versus hole size of Q5, around 2 to 3 thou difference is about normal for most carbs on most bikes, remember guys these carbs are not "jetted out of the box" they are "way safe" to put it politely ,as they don't know what your bike has done to it.

A White Bros 36 VM Mikuni came with this jetting MJ 220-240 PJ 30-35 1 3/4 TURNS pilot screw 17-19 mm float CA 3.0 P-8 needle jet 6DH3-2 Needle can't remember if the 2 clip position is from the top or bottom-close either way. Your carb is differently jetted obviously. I think most VM36 start life as 2 stroke carbs. Charlie

How can you tell which neele jet you have? How is it removed. I thought it might be pressed in. Anyway, I didn't want to chance it so I left it in when I cleaned the carb.
Also, I read an old article about shaving the slide to cure richness. Sounds too permanent, no turning back after it's done.

The WB VM36 used a 1.5, 2.5 or 3.0 throttle valve depending on when it was purchased. (WB went leaner over time) and no air jet. In my experience all the pre jetted carbs from WB were slightly on the rich side as received. How can you tell which neele jet you have? How is it removed. I thought it might be pressed in. Anyway, I didn't want to chance it so I left it in when I cleaned the carb.
It is held in place by the main jet. It will push out, up through the carb body. The number can be read on the side of the jet once it is removed. It should say something like"166 Q8". 166 is the series. The letter/number combo is the size. PC

Q8 needle jet is big. I think P8 is the standard. I am thinking of going down to P6 for a test.

So the White Brothers carb didn't come with an air jet. How big of a difference does it make? My carb (a White Brothers carb) didn't come with one so I assumed it was lost over time and replaced it using a 2.0.
