Hi, new here and needing help. I have a 78 SR that I'm trying to get going after a 15 year hibernation. I've found rebuild kits for the calipers and a kit for the front master, but no luck on a rear kit.
So far I've only worked on the front, and I can't get the retaining ring out of the front master cylinder. The holes for the retainer are partially covered in the groove and I can't get to them. I tried to pry it out with a pick tool, but only succeeded in bending the tool. Is there some trick to getting them out?
Thanks

Just snap ring pliers. No tricks though.

Before you get to the internal circlip - the black thing with the 2 partially covered holes - you first have to prise out a simple wire spring clip that sits on top of the whole assembly. use a small flat blade screwdriver and just work it in behind one of the free ends and it should pop out without much effort. beneath that is a plastic washer which you can fiddle out with same screwdriver. the holes on the retaining circlip are then fully visible, but you'll need a very long-nosed pair of circlip pliers to get to them. reason i am on the forum is because i have just found that mine are too short. good luck.

THanks, I found the plastic washer-it was what was covering the circlip holes. My snap ring pliers are too short as well. Did you find a source for longer ends? Now I'm having problems with the rear caliper...no matter what I try the piston WILL NOT come out. I've already hit it with as much air as my compressor will pump, pried on it, and beat on it while I held the piston with a big pair of channel locks as a last resort. Looks like I'm gonna end up trying to find a caliper. I'm beginning to get frustrated enough with this bike that I'm about ready to send it on its merry way.... What years/models use the same brake parts?

Try reconnecting it to the master and bleed the system. You may not even need to completely bleed the system. Just pump the brake pedal to get it out. This will place ALOT more force behind the piston than what will come out of a compressor. If your careful, you can stop just before the piston comes out and all that brake fluid goes every where.
One other alternative is to just soak it in a kerosene/oil bath or parts washer. Remember kerosene is flammable.

Thought about using fluid pressure to pop it out, but without working masters I can't. I also can't find a rebuild kit for the rear master...if I can ever get the snap ring out of the front master I have a kit for it-then I might be able to blow apart the rear caliper. The front was no problem. I've come to a conclusion...working on SR500 brakes REALLY sucks.

Hey racer32, I got my rear caliper/master cylinder rebuild parts from Mark @ Thumperstuff. That rear master cylinder rebuild kit is NOT cheap! Check out MikesXS. He sells complete calipers for a reasonable amount. He also sells an inexpensive long reach snap ring pliers. Give 'em a look. Jeron

You could probably find a used rear XS650 Special caliper fer cheap too.
