Anyone shortened their rear fender and have a pic or two to share? I've picked up a very good used one and am thinking of whacking about 4" out of my existing one as an experiment.  My existing fender is a bit scratched up and would not be a terrible loss if I booger it up. Looking for some ideas here........anyone? |

Before I cut my frame rails and the stock fender no long fit, I cut a ~4" section from the fender just aft of the rear rubber mounts and welded it back together. Some light sanding with a 4" disk smoothed it all. My original fender was rusted so the black paint to cover it all was an improvement. I also bobbed the front fender at the same time and painted to match. Sorry, but no pictures and I've since installed fiber glass fenders.

Many years ago, I shortened a STD rear guard on my 1978 model SR, by cutting it in half between the the front and rear rubber mounts. I then fitted it in place with what were the rear mounting rubbers in the front mounting holes on the frame and drilled a couple of extra holes in the brace that ran across between the two ends of the subframe (above the rear blinker mounts) to support the rear end of the guard.
Of course the std taillight could no longer be fitted to the guard, and I fitted a small universal LUCAS replica taillight.
I will have a look in the big box of bits in the shed and if I can find it I will post a picture.

Hey pcnsd, how do fiberglass fenders hold up? I've got cracks in all my sheetmetal including the license plate. I can't imagine fiberglass holding up to that much vibration, but I've never tried it.

Thanks for "hijacking" my thread, joneill.......cracks in the sheetmetal wasn't exactly the modification I was looking for.  Maybe you need some new shocks?! If the metal is going away, you can pretty much skip the fiberglas.....why don't you try injection molded rubber? ;D |

I found a picture of my SR500 from the days when it was fitted with a cut-down std rear guard/fender.  The guard has been cut back as describeded in my previuos post. CJ |

For Jonneill4,
I have been mounting the registration/licence plates on my 500's using tap washers (you know the rubber washers from inside bathroom taps) for several years now and have not one crack and the rego plates here in SA are made of thin gauge aluminium (recycled beer cans, I think!).
