I've read quite a bit about this Porsche modification business, but as a fresh owner of a '78 SR 500 (complete with annoying tappet noises) I'm wondering if these babies came out of the factory with the noise, or did they mostly all (from what Ive read) seem to develop it?? What's the tappet story here??

Exhaust side is usually a little noisy but can easily be fixed by running a dual-feed oil line. It tee's the oil line so it feeds both the intake and exhaust side rockers. Thumperstuff.com sells a kit.

If the valve clearances have been adjusted and you still have tappet noise, the chances are that the ends of the valve stems are pitted. When this happens you end up with excessive clearance even if you have done everthing correctly when setting the valve clearances.
You can try and look at the end of the valve stems by removing the adjusting screws and using an inspection light and mirror too confirm if they are pitted. If they are, the only way to fix the problem is to fit new valves and adjusting screws.

You can buy "elephant foot" swivel ball type adj screws from VD Classics(France). I wouldn't be surprised to find out the Thumperstuff (USA)also has them. If they are still out there them they are easier than the "porche mod". You can probably fit them without pulling the motor I think(be very careful of course-the swivel foot can fall out,so use a stiff grease to hold it in place). Charlie

Back about 8 years ago when I was building my VW powered race car I inquired about the Porsche "elephant foot" adjusters. I was told that the newer ones (remember this is 8 years ago) were junk. He said that they were now made from piss poor steel and would deform and break apart. This was from a man that I know has 30+ years with aircooled VW's. Using these adjusters is/was a common mod for the VW crowd. If you can find a older set made from a good quality steel, snag them up. I have a set from the mid '80's that I know are good ones. To bad they are still in my old VW race engine. I haven't heard anything bad about the newer "swivel ball" adjusters though. I don't think these require grinding off the bottom of the rocker to fit as the "elephant foot" adjusters do. "Elephant foot" adjuster "Swivel Ball" adjuster
