Hi everyone. I purchased my first motorbike yesterday, and guess what it was? Good guess....1978 SR 500. I have a feeling you'll all be reading a bit of me on this here forum. I am pretty much what you'd call the green novice.
Mechanically I am ok, have tinkered with cars for over 20 years and broken down (and fixed myself up) from plenty of situations on plenty of continents.
But this bike business is ENTIRELY new to me. Example to support me....owned the bike 24 hours, already had the thing slide out from under me in autumn traffic today....I landed (almost) upright over the bars, which wasn't too bad. The exhaust suffered a dent as it landed on that side (I can literally see you all cringe). I believe I snapped/cut a fuel line of some sort underneath, as fuel is pissing out the bottom as the motor runs...(too wet to check now, saturday promises exciting adventures in repairing).
I'm off to the fuel forum site next to ask advice on this.
I am located in Oslo Norway, though an Australian by birth (and what irony to have parts etc. available around the corner from where I used to live!!). The guy who sold her to me bought her in Sweden last year. He even threw in the Haynes workshop manual (in English thankfully!!) and the Swedish group has the owner's manual pdf'd on their site (in swedish...which is very cumbersome to read), so basic things like how to kick-start properly etc..very basic stuff..I am still getting my head around.
Looks like a mighty fine forum here, well thought out. I own a VW camper and have had experience with their forum...this is on par, so congratulations!
In advance, I'd like to thank you all for enduring my future naive questions and overall inadequacy in biking mechanics.
I promise to invest all tender loving care on my SR 500!!
