Stumbled across the site and just registered. I own a 1981 SR500H. Bought it new and have had it ever since. It's not stock now. She cracked a ring back in 1990 and started smoking so the makeover began - Wisco piston, WB-1 cam, supertrapp pipes & muffler, Mikuni 40mm carb with a gunnar Gasser throttle. Tires changed to Dunlops, Progressive Suspension fork springs and rear shocks, rearset pegs, moulded seat, drag bars with barends and a Lucas style tail lamp. The Yamaha Decals on the tank and sidecovers were cracking so it all was sanded down smooth and painted jet black. It was an easy starter and a fun rider. Sadly she was deregistered for legal reasons in 2003 and has been relegated to the shed under cover since then. I pulled the cover last night and and am horrified to find the Gecko's and spiders have invaded. The fuel line and seat cover is cracked, the tires soft, forktubes rusted, the front brake stuck, the breather filter has turned to mush and aluminum oxide all over the engine. So, it looks like I'm doing a 1990 deal again but I want to swap out the steel wheels and put in a more retro looking spoked wheel/drum brake deal front and rear, S/steel exhaust, clubman bars and FRP fenders ( the steel fenders are totally rusted) - Wish me luck and if I get stuck I may pick ya'll's brains a tad for advice. Thanks!

Thanks guys - I live in Japan and they still make the SR400/500. There was a following of the SR series some years back and there was a whole gaggle of aftermarket parts available from various sources throughout Japan. Parts are not cheap. I have some old catalogs squirreled away somewhere for ideas. A quick check and it looks like the www is the way to go for me, I can have stuff mailed thru the military post office in the USA. Lots to do, lots to plan and of course I have to clear out the shed. I seem to remember that many SX650 parts will fit the SR - got some work to do!
