I prefer the Clymer, but have found one or two small errors in it that were correct in Haynes. Clymer is also SR500 specific which makes it less confusing. I'd say get the Clymer to start, pick up a Haynes when you can, and watch ebay for a Yamaha shop manual cheap.

I have always used a genuine Yamaha service manual. I got it back in the early 80's from my local Yamaha dealer, who I used to work for and race with.
As Miker said, it you keep an eye on Ebay the occasionally come up as do copies of the manual on CD.

P.S. I have made a PDF copy of the Spare pParts Manual for the 1978 SR500E (Australia model) and I you want I can email you a copy.

Can't go wrong with the factory manual. I ordered one on e-Bay for like $15 (US). It was a CD version and had the complete manual for TT's, XT's, and the SR Suppliment, complete with all photos and diagrams. The disc even had extra goodies on it like carburation theory, suspension topics, etc. I printed off the entire manual for a hard-copy version for the workshop.
ColinJay, Does your parts manual for your '78 corispond to US models? I would love to get my mits on a copy. I can PM my email address.

I have the same one as entropy, except I bought the actual book version. Sorta vague in some areas, but it has all the vital information you need. Needs an index, too.

Entropy,
I have never looked into what the differences are between the AUS and the US models, but I suspect they would only be minor.
PM me your email address or sent me an email (dcjay1@activ8.net.au) and I will forward you a copy.

Other than paint colour options and full time headlight operation...not much difference at all with the SRs. I have many manuals...just bought a perfect condition genuine Yam one for a somewhat exhorbitant price in Adelaide...wouldn't deal with those people again! One price on the net and another when you ring (back), plus they agreed to send the manual when I first bought it over the phone for the advertised price and then didn't; waiting several weeks until I rang them back again to see why it hadn't arrived. Then they said that there was no way that they'd sell it for the price it showed for on the net because it was in such good condition!!! Should have passed it up but I didn't. I didn't have one...so reluctantly I gave in. Definitely won't deal with them again though...once bitten... The Clymer book isn't bad, either is the genuine one. The Cycleserv manual is as is usual for them, a dead copy of the genuine one. I also have the Haynes one in digital form thanks to one of the great guys that we have on here. SR
