I had a very unhappy ride yesterday. Everything started out great. My gradual carb jetting/tuning has been coming along great and the bike has been running better than ever.
The bike was running like a top at the start of a group ride. About 30 miles into the ride (mixed street traffic and coastal highway), it started bucking, surging, sputtering and nearly dying at anything above about 1/8 throttle and around 3500 rpm. This only happened under load. In neutral I could wind her up to redline at all throttle positions. The feeling was very much like an over-rich needle setting. I also think I could hear a faint knocking or clattering sound from the top end during the surging. Hard to tell because my exhaust is loud. By shifting early and creative clutch-work from stops, I was able to sputter home.
Oh yeah, it's a '78 with a Mikuni VM34-168 carb, round K&N air cleaner and a shorty "free flow" exhaust.
These are the things I have verified: - The main jet was tight - There is no blockage in the main or needlejet - Changing the needle height in either direction does not change the symptoms much - The plug is showing rich but not fouled - The carb is clamped tightly in the boot which has no cracks and appears to be well sealed to the head.
I am reasonably sure that this isn't a fuel system issue. A couple of fellows mentioned timing and valves in another thread. Could either of those explain the sudden onset of my symptoms?

I also read that a dying regulator/rectifier could cause the cutting out or misfiring off-idle. Anyone? Help?

I believe ignition is independent of the regulator/rectifier. I'd suspect timing due to the sudden occurrence. Maybe check the flywheel for a sheered woodruff key. Could also be the coil or CDI breaking down. Just my 2cents.

Thanks manxman! I will check for the sheared woodruff key first.

I have had two dying stators. The bike runs progressively worse and will die and restart during this process and eventually stop running altogethor. Regulator Rectifiers on these bikes seem to be good unlike other bikes I have had. A dying/dead reg rectifier on a VFR would just cause the bike to quit altogethor. Once the battery ran out that was all. The circuity is different on the SR and if the regulator rectifier quit on the SR I think it would stop completely, but I maybe wrong and I dont think the Reg/Rectifier is in the ignition circuitry at all.
I have never run the bike with the valves out of adjustment. Just from my experience I would say check stator, which you can measure with a volt/ohm. There are some threads in the forum that give you ohm values for the wires. For the CDI; check the timing with a timing light and then check valve adjustment. I bet it is CDI/timing or stator going out. Like someone mentioned before it could be the flywheel has busted a woodruff key whacking your timing.
I have found a two legged puller from the auto parts store to be a good flywheel puller.

cliff- Cool man, I'll check those out. I've haven't had a chance to open her up yet. Probably won't til Saturday. The guys at work are convinced it's a carburetor issue. I really don't think it is.

if the cam chain is worn it may have jumped a tooth or maybe the cam sprocket bolts came loose...(trying to explain the knocking /clatering sound). If your electics and flywheel key check out fine I would zip the top off the motor. my .02

I know you have no doubt already done this but there is no bockage in the fuel delivery....
