ive got an 85 sr400. it has spoke wheels and drums. im wanting to do a disc brake conversion on it. i was thinking of buying some of the cast wheels and using the vanem big brake kit along with a rear disc/caliper off a late rmodel SR.
problem is i dont know where i can source these parts and dont know the exact parts i will need for the conversion. i take it i will need the speedo drive and possibly a discbrake swing arm???
if anyone can let me know the smaller parts needed to do the conversion taht would be great.
cheers

It's far easier to use the mag wheels than to try to find a suitable rear disc hub. Although there are some around, they're really hard to find! There is a post here on some different disc hubs if you have a look. There are differences in the frames as well for the rear brake that make a standard master cylinder set-up difficult to fit without some cutting and welding. The front caliper should go on. You may need the later model caliper depending on the fork lugs on your bike...not 100% sure there. If you use rearsets it is much simpler however, as a master cylinder can attach to them...not the standard SR one however. If you mostly use the standard setup you would need at least the following: - Front and rear wheels including discs...front wire wheel for disc is also available but a rear??? (RD250/400C/D; TDM250; others can be adapted with work).
- Front and rear calipers and rear caliper mount and torque arm and attaching hardware.
- Front speedo drive, disc wire wheel or mag model are the same.
- Front and 'a' rear mastercylinder...brake hoses...
- Swing arm is useful if you're fitting a standard SR caliper and mount to the back. E or F model only.
- Not sure about the axles and spacers etc, you'd have to compare them yourself.
Hope that helps a little. SR

Cheez mate , you could've saved me a grand as I'm doing the opposite to you as I'm taking the disks/mags off 1 of mine & putting drums/spokes on(we could've done a straight swap if you'd live'd next door)& thats my next minor hurdle is the swingarm . I don't want to hijack your thread but a question to anyone who may know ,would a 77 XT 500 swingarm fit the SR for this purpose?(I have access to one)Cheers Dave.
