I recently sealed my gas tank on my SR500 (AKA THUMPS). When I first got it running, I would have to tap the inline fuel filter as it clogged with rust after 2 miles.
For the past several years I have been making composite bicycles and have experience using West systems epoxy. I thought that that might make a good sealant. I called their tech department and they said that they had tested their epoxy for up to 16 weeks and found that it had increased in weight after contact with gasoline. They had not done any analysis in strength but it didnt sound good. They recommended using KBS fuel tank sealant.
I got a kit ordered over the phone and it was delivered the next day. The kit has three steps. First a wash, second a rust remover step and then apply the sealant. They said to let the tank dry for 4 days after the sealant is used to let it cure. I am going to add gas to it tonight.
Once I get it running well again I am going to build some body work for it. I was thinking of making my own tank but then thought of crashing a carbon tank and spilling 3 gallons of gas over everything made me reevaluate.

How did the KBS sealant work? Looks like I'm also going to need some.

Thanks. So far no leaks. I am about to treat my second SR this weekend. Make sure that you use all three steps and make sure that you dry between steps.

Has anybody used the sealant sold by Eastwood company? Just wondering if it was any good.
