Ok,
So I've been looking around the fuel threads looking for a replacement carburetor but I haven't found all the information I need to make a decision.
Goal: I want a carburetor that will make starting the bike easier and more reliable.
Status: From what I've read two of the most popular carb swaps in the 36mm Mikuni Flat Slide Pumper Carb from Thumperstuff or the Mikuni HS40.
Re the 36mm: Will this help with starting over the stock 78 carb? Is this a straight swap? No additional modifications needed. Are different size jets required?
Re the HS40: From the documentation it doesn't seem that the choke mechanism matches the sr500 choke, how easy a swap is this? what is need?
Ultimate question: Which one is a better alternative than the stock carb when it comes to starting?

If you want to replace the stock carby...simplest swap is to the Mikuni VMS 36 or 38mm carbs. I prefer the 38 myself. You can buy these pre-jetted from the US (with cable as well I understand) or from Ian Williams in SA for those here in Aus. Once dialled in you won't need to touch 'em again in normal circumstances...quick re-tune now and then...makes life much simpler. There are other carbs you can use but none simpler. SR

Stew, Do you know which US retailer carries the pre-jetted VMS 36?

get the $19 carbholder from thumperstuff too. fits the carb better than the stock holder. does the vm 36 fit the stock airbox?

I guess these bikes just aren't meant for people who want "instant gratification" "pre dialled" in a box etc, etc, they should just buy a new bike and press the button.......

Hey Guys,
In regards to the 38mm Mikuni. I just picked a 38mm roundslide Mikuni at a swapmeet this weekend, what jetting works best with an XT500 running a large diameter pipe with K&N pod filter?
