ok guys, I just took delivery of my 1978 sr500. The seller started within 1-2 kicks so I know it works. I spent the next few hours practicing how to start it. I ended up draining the battery , 8 volt across the terminal. Do I need to charge the battery again before trying to start it? If so is it okay to use a car battery charger? Or is there a better way?

Don't use the "kick indicator" move the kickstarter slowly untill it reaches the hard part [TDC] then pull the decomp lever and move the kicker down only about 2 inches, you should get three clicks as the lever comes back up, then a good follow through kick, sometimes easier done on the centre stand, when perfected I have seen a 79 year old man kick one of my engines sitting on the seat!!!

Asicman, just FYI the battery has nothing to do with starting/ignition on the SR500... unusual I know but true. Just start it and ride it around a while to charge it up.

You need to become as one with the machine. You must BE the engine... How do you feel today? Cold? Might need the choke on. Warm? Might leave the choke off. Hot? Might use the hot start button Do you have nice fresh fuel? Ease the piston up to where you feel the compression, then open your exhaust valve with the decompression lever and ease your piston over top dead centre. Carl is right - ignore that little window thingy and meld your mind with the machine - feel when things are right. Make sure you have moved the piston just enough that when you move the kick start lever back up it re-engages right at the top of the kick stroke. I always know when my baby is going to start, because it does this. If I have gone too far over TDC, the kick start does not reengage until about halfway down the stroke, and I know she will not start, because there is not enough to travel left to ensure the piston goes through the right number of up and down strokes. "Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow, that's what makes a thumper go" If you have several goes, then she will not start because she is so full of air/fuel mix that she is choking on the fumes. Take off the choke, pull in the decomp lever and give her several good kicks to clear her delicate lung. Then leave the choke off and begin the ritual again. It will come, then for ever and always will you be in harmony with the machine. Except when my @#%$ing XT caught me in a an unguarded moment last night and did her best to blow my knee and ankle into little bits. I'd just made her a present of 8 litres of the finest 98 octane that money can buy! And except when CJ's salt lake racer knew that everyone was watching and expended her entire 12.5:1 compression ratio wearing him to a frazzle trying to start her. Keep trying brother. Once you get the knack it will get easy and you will love it. Mick
