ok guys, I just took delivery of my 1978 sr500. The seller started within 1-2 kicks so I know it works. I spent the next few hours practicing how to start it. I ended up draining the battery , 8 volt across the terminal. Do I need to charge the battery again before trying to start it? If so is it okay to use a car battery charger? Or is there a better way?

The ignition system doesn't require a battery to fire. You could charge the battery with a 1-2 amp/hr charger or just let the charging system on the bike charge it for you.

The battery doesn't normally discharge when you are trying to start the bike ,unless say the headlight was on whist you are trying to do so ( but this doesn't generally matter anyway).Have a surf of some of the older threads in say the engine or electrical section & you'll find a few proven starting methods as there are a few tricks to be learned! Its all in the fun cheers Dave.
