hey all. i am lucky enough to have a spare xt/tt500 points ignition engine. it's been rebuilt - but not assembled. i also have all the external electrics for an SR 500 - CDI coil etc. to convert the xt to 12v and CDI - what parts do i need - and can i keep the XT/TT engine case/cover as it is? i was going to send both engine side covers away to be powdercoated, but if i need to change them - i won't. is this an easy job? - can anyone help with a quick rundown?
Thanks in Advance, Ken In NZ

Hi. The external covers are basically the same as far as I know. I am in the process of doing the same with my TT. However I do vaguely remember reading that the wires for an SR come out of the cover lower down than the XT/TT wires and you may need to cut a small slot in the back of the cover for them to fit. I am sure someone else here will be more knowledgeable on this than me. Regards Alan

Depends on what year model the sr ignition is.Onlate models the trigger unit was moved from about 2o clock to about 4 oclock on the outside of the stator plate. Everything else is the same, but you will have to cut the case and the sidecover in the area of the wiring cutout to fit it in. If the trigger is at the 2 oclock position it should bolt straight in. If it is a lte model unit, there is a safety cutout earth wire in the wiring mix that could cause you grief by rendering the whole plot dead until its bypassed. It can be done as i have fitted a 93 ignition into a 79 tt motor. The coil mount needs to be changed as well as the sr coil is bigger than the tt coil. Cheers Franky b.

I am running a SR electrical system on the 1976 XT500C (fitted with a 1977 XT500D engine)that I am riding in this years SA state Reliability Trials series.
The flywheel (from a 1983 SR400) and stator plate (1978 SR500) where a bolt on job and I am using the original XT500D LH engine cover. The points are still fitted in the RH/clutch cover and are not connected to anything.
I am using a 1978 SR500 ignition coil, which, as Franky b. points out, will not fit into the STD XT coil mounting brackets and is currently held in place by 4 plastic cable ties. Yes, I know its bit rough and after over 30years in the electrical/electronic trades I should know better, but it works and has not given any problems in well over 1000km of competition riding. In the same vein, the CDI unit is stuffed up ontop of the STD XT500 airbox and is held in place by the seat. I bolted the Regulator/rectifier onto the side of the battery carrier and have fitted a 12 battery that was the same size as the STD XT500 6V battery.
I bastardised an old 1978 SR500 wiring loom to accept the wiring from the STD XT500C handle bar switchs and removed the leftover wiring that wasn't used.
Obviously all the globes have been changed to 12V ones as has the flasher unit for the indicators. I am running a QH 55/60w headlight globe in a 1978 XS1100 headlight, and a 100w QH globe in a spotlight mounted above the headlight. Using the spotlight does draw current from the battery and slowly flattens the battery, but it is only used during special stages, which are normally only the 2 - 10km long, and the battery then gets recharged during the transport stages.
If you want any mor info, just ask.

This is just what I was looking for. I have a 1980 TT500 and want to change it to CDi for ease of maintenance etc. I also have a 1980 SR400 and have been comparing parts so I think it should be a simple enough job. I know I need an SR500 or 400 magneto, ignition coil and cdi unit, do I also need the SR flywheel or will the TT one work? Also, as I am not running lights, I figure I don't need the regulator/rectifier or battery - or at least that's my take on the wiring diagram. Any thoughts? Cheers.

You will definately need the sr flywheel. If you are running it as a total loss system, consider removing all the windings that you no longer need, as they will overheat otherwise. The plug cap may also need to be replaced, but as i'm not sure if they have different resistance values, it may not be necessary. Cheers Franky b.
