Hey pablosrfivehundred, what top speed can your XS happily reach? Damien's 1980 XS400 struggles doing 100km/hr (NB km) on the freeway, and I reckon it could easily do better - even my girlfriend's 1981 SR185 did 125km/hr with speed to spare, even though ne'er a service and there was a storm happening, last time I tried! (-but then, it IS an SR! ) Matt

Here's Damien's XS400. We've just started to service her. Currently she's running lean on one plug, and fouling on the other! Should be a totally different ride and look by the time we've finished doing the restoration and modifications. A pleasant bike to ride, within its simple limits. Matt

well actually, i just got the license and paper work done today. and yes, i jumped right on the freeway. when i hit 80 mph(130 kph), i realized i actually don't know how this bike reacts at speed yet. so i backed off....a little the bike still had more to give. but with three points on my license already.... i might not be able to top it out. supposedly they'll reach 105 mph(170 kph) but who knows...

I had a '81 Special II that I bought from a farmer for $700 in 2001. It had spoked wheels, drum brakes front & rear, kick and electric start. First thing I did was trash the buckhorn handlebars and an awful aftermarket sissybar. Cleaned the carbs and proceeded to ride the s**t out of it for the next 2 years. Everything on it worked. What a great, reliable little bike. I would love to find an older one like in the pics above.

We're in the process of getting a manual but won't have it in time for a service session this weekend. Anybody have one and thus know the plug gaps, valve clearances, and fork oil volume for the 1980 XS above?
