Anyone had experience with the XS400?
I'm a fan of the 650's, but haven't had much to do with them
I only ask because I was looking at this on ebay
Item number: 190180490577
could be a nice cafe racer without trying to hard...

I've owned two since 1988. The first (1977, the futuristic looking model as shown in the posted photos above) was my first bike and I didn't really know how to maintain it...but it was fun while it lasted. I bought my second one (I think a '78, looking a bit more like a classic Brit twin) in 1993 with less than 10,000 miles on it for around 400.00. I didn't have a shed or garage, so it quickly looked like s---. However, I rode it every day; it was my only transportation for two years. I kept decently sticky tires on it, stuck on a set of ace bars, fabbed an exhaust when the rusty originals blew out (literally) and had a ball. It was great on fuel and had plenty of power (I carried my now-wife pillion many times). The only issue I ever had with it was the death of the ignition box but I had it replaced (remember, no shed!), a halogen head lamp installed, and a few other little "upgrades" for less than 100.00. I live in Virginia and rode that bike all over the mid Atlantic, even up to NYC one weekend. It is one of two bikes I wish I had never sold. In this way it is similar to an SR, it is light enough that small power/braking changes really make a difference! Good luck and have fun, Kevin

we had those as well. this was the model in the advertisment that said "not cheaper, just less expensive". also no electric starter kick only. the regular models had disc brakes front and rear, mag wheels like the SR, and a electric starter.

Mate of mine (with one of those silly modern over-powered over-smooth bikes) has been thinking about getting an SR since I got mine, but as they're a bit out of his price range for a second bike, when I showed him an 1980 XS400 on eBay last week he jumped at it. VGC, $1600 with RWC, and we're riding up tomorrow to pick it up and ride it back to Melbourne. Then begins our cafe racer project, including - because it's about fun and about learning - getting a rebore and fitting new racy pistons etc ourselves. Will start a project thread for it and post some "before" pics.

Hey - this thread just gets better and better!!
A mate of mine sent me a link to it.
I started reading... interesting, seeing as I've just bought an XS400 (as yet unsighted) off eBay.
... I kept reading... a couple of good reviews on these bikes... reliable... cheap....
I then get to the bottom and start reading about some guy who's mate has bought one and is picking it up tomorrow... then the penny dropped - "hey! That's me!"
Regards the comment about "those silly modern over-powered over-smooth bikes"... you'll keep...
:-)
