hey all. i have just taken delivery of a nice '81 sr500h (now i have 2!) and am going to sort out the forks. they are stupidly soft (27 years will do that i suppose) i will get ikon springs - but can anyone answer the "how much oil" question? i was thinking of running 20 weight - i weigh 92 kilos. any help would be appreciated.

The old Haynes manual says 182cc of 10wt. For you at 92kg, I would bump it up to 15wt. and about 200-210cc. I can't imagine the Ikon springs being so heavy to need 20wt. oil. The higher amount of oil will reduce the air space above it and will make the fork more progressive ( IE: get stiffer sooner) If you find that they get to stiff too quickly, drain a bit of oil. You can do this gradually till you get it where you want. Try about 5cc at a time. Conversely, if it isn't enough, add more oil. Again, about 5cc at a time.

I agree with Ken above. When referring to the original Yamaha manual, it shows 182ml (6.15oz) of fork oil. The grade listed is SAE 20W/40 Type SE motor oil! I have run 20wt fork oil using stock springs with good results. YMMV Everyone may have different requirements and views on what is the ideal set up though. You will need to experiment to see what suits you and your particular application. Here is a link to the spec page: www.slash5.net/sr500/b0000deg.gifG Man

Before you make drastic, and expensive changes, measure how much oil comes out. I put up with a crazy amount of dive for over a year only to find that there was only 160mL of oil in it. I put about 190mL back in it and the dive is gone. Oh, BTW, I'm over 100kg.
