Hey all I got a nice Yamaha SR 500 78 model with a Supersound system on it. But im a member of the national veteran motorcycle club here in Norway and i kinda want their insurance wich is very cheap. Problem is that ive modified my bike alot and need to show it at a local traffic station. And thats were all the blokes who didint become mechanics but instead chose to make life torture for everyone who modifies their bikes and cars work. I need to at least get my hands on a original exhaust or a replica. Prob need header pipe and end-can. I need to get the noise down so it will pass a "Decibel test". Any of you guys/girls know were i can get my hands on a good exhaust wich doesnt scare these people to much? I have seen replica end cans on ebay.com. Any idea if these are any good? Either way if would only be something that i would use on the bike when showing it to make the modifications ive made printed into my papers on my bike. Not sure if they will approve the bike even with a original exhaust. The people here can be quite difiicult.... Here's a picture of my bike. Im thinking they can also complain on my blinkers and the new front-brake. Even thou is better(way better) than the orignal one.

That's a fine looking bike. Out of curiosity, do you have to get some kind of safety-check in order to obtain insurance? Why would there be a problem with the front brake and signals? Because they're not stock? Man, the vehicle authorities must be picky in Norway.

Yes, registration can be a pain on a modified bike. You should at least be able to 'borrow' someone's exhaust...isn't there anyone one with a standardish one there somewhere? As for the brakes and the rest it may be simpler in your case to change it all back temporarily put it through and then change it all back again...painfull I know. Do they list all the modifications on your registration papers? SR

I know a mate with a 81 sr500. He should have an original exhaust i can borrow. But would be nice to have a original or replica for the "decibel test". In norway its very hard to get a modified bike approved by the traffic stations. They will make up a reason for you not to get your bike approved if they have to. We are not a member of the EU but we have controls on our cars every second year and they are talking about doing the same things to motorcycles. Thats why i would be nice with an exhaust thats "quiet" so there will be no fuzz. As for the changes to be inserted into my papers im not sure. I tried for whats called a restored veteran bike with mods insurance. They said i had to show the bike at the local traffic station before they would approve my application. What i want is for the changes to be inserted into my papers. For example its not a 2 seter anymore as im running a mono-saddle and no pegs for a passenger. With the modifications in my papers i can get a full coverage insurance for a very low price(by norwegian standards). Thats the only reason why im looking for an exhaust. As for the frontbrake. I dont know if it will be approved. But would be cool to get it into my registration papers the way it is, except for the exhaust. They hate noise as much as we love it i guess

One way may be to get yourself a Supertrap type then remove most of the discs for rego...put them back after it's done. That way it would be rego'd with the pipe you would run all the time. As for the indicators and the brake...take it through and see what happens...so long as it all works you might just get it through. Do they actually know what an SR should look like? They're getting on a bit now so they may not even know what it really is. SR

The supersound system i have actually have a supertrap setup on the end can. I could try and make something less noisy. I do have buddy who is a great mechanic. He just made his own "stock" rear exhaust to his Honda XL600R out of scrap-metal. He can proberbly help me. Could try and make some sort of silencer for the end can. That way i can run it all the time as you say. Im guessing they have no idea what an SR 500 looks like stock as they have the motorcycle knowledge of a gerbil. I showed my car there once i was shocked on how little they really knew about basic stuff. My blinkers are marked to be road-safe inside the EU. And as for the brake. Its all Yamaha parts only updated ofcourse. Ill have a go at fiddling with my Supersound exhaust. If i get that inside the frames of alloved noise, i just might go for it

That's brutal that they're so strict in Norway. In Canada, you only need a safety check when you sell the vehicle. As long as you continue owning it, they re-register it every year automatically....for 60 bucks. If a Supertrapp is available, they're really quiet with about 4 or five discs inserted, but the bike will run rich.

No safety checks, or decibel checks here. Just buy the bike, get it registered and insured sight unseen!

Sounds like they are really protecting you from having fun. I was pregnant dogin' because the registration folks wanted to see the bike when I first got it.since it came from a different state. If it had been from here in Florida I wouldn't have even had to show the bike to register it. Time to change some of your traffic laws, you sholdn't have to put up with crap like that. (I cant believe that I actually said pregnant doggin')
