Are the cranks the same on the XT and SR so you could swap the XT 6v and SR 12v systems? Thanks - Rod sprints @pldi.net

Hallo Sprints,
there are some differents in the cranks from the xt and sr 500 depending of year of make. however the left sides where the flywheel is fixed are all the same. so you can swap the generators. btw the never xt500`s are 12v

I always thought that XTs were only 6 volt as well, but in late 1981-82 some models were fitted with electronic ignitions.

Hmm, is this a standard Yamaha system? Any details on the CDI system? SR

Hi Stew
The photo came from a Columbian used bike advertisement. One of the selling points was the Yamaha electronic ignition and 12 volt lighting. So far there have been 3 different advertisments makign the same claim on bikes built between 1981 and 1982.
I will be making more inquiries as my Spanish improves !!

Interesting, I would have thought that it would have been easier for Yamaha to simply fit the SR engine. I reckon I've seen some pics of a late model XT ('82 or later) with the same clutch cover as an SR and I figured that perhaps they'd fitted the SR engine in the later ones... SR
