I was looking for parts for my running SR 500 and came to a dirt bike dealer who had a fairly nice xt500. It is a stock 79 model with the aluminum tank. I has new tires on it and 600 miles on the clock Had a bit of weathered finish. OTD for 800.
My wife saw a Virago 700. An 86. We are going to pick it up next week. She rides a scooter and a 125 four stroke yamaha dirt bike now.
My count is 3 Yamaha 500's. My others are a 78 SR that runs and one that doesnt.

Looks like you won't lack for anything to do over the Winter! The '80 model I bought (rough) has been a lot of fun, and a challenge. Swing arm was removed by cutting the pivot shaft bolt on each side with a quickie saw...a 2000 lb. hydraulic press didn't budge it. My $700.00 purchase was a down payment on what will be an uncalculable sum at present.....but at the end I'll add it all up. Sandblasting, powder coating, polishing, OEM parts, ThumperStuff parts, eBay finds, professional painting of tank, tail-piece, side covers.......yada, yada, yada. We don't have motorcycle bone yards like that in Oklahoma.....wish we did....guess you guys up in Minnesota just crash a LOT more than us Okies!

Yeah maybe I should be trplthump.... We did a two up ride on the XT for about 50 miles this afternoon. Rode some ridge roads with lots of curves. Maximum speed was about 75. Had no leaks, good steady performance. After we got back we rode our dirt bikes and I noticed the lack of torque, and weight . Not in Minnesota but am in Missouri and sometimes Illinois. If you are around NE Mo. stop by Performance cycle in Kirksville.
