Everything seems good but she just won't start!!: I have fitted a brand new carb (36mm Mikuni) and a battery eliminator (White Brothers?). I have taken the spark plug (new) out and visually it seems to be sparking nicely. I have taken the screw at the base of the carb out and fuel pisses out of that. I have put the ignition timing back to mid way (I was mucking around with it prior to fitting the new stuff). I have tried putting some fuel directly into the carb and I sometimes get a pop and other times a very loud explosion . I have tried hooking the battery back up (thinking the eliminator wasn't giving me enough oomph to get a good spark whilst everything is not set properly). My technique for starting is to kick it around to compression, use the decomp lever to move it just past this point then, with the throttle off I kick...and nothing! I have also tried roll starting it but to no avail. If I have spark and fuel in the carb surely it would at least pop and splutter and possibly catch wouldn't it? Without putting fuel direct into the carb I can't get a pop out of it. Anything else I must check?

If it's getting fuel, air, and spark, the only thing left is compression. Has it been sitting for very long? If it has, check the pilot jet to see if it is clogged. When I was working in a shop I saw mice nests inside the airbox and exhausts full of dry cat food (again from mice). That one was funny ;D Watching cat food fly across the shop when it did start.

I haven't checked the compression but I assume it is OK because I can't push it through TDC (does that make sense?). It did run prior to me mucking around with it (although never a smooth idle but I did not care as I had so much to do to it anyway). It had been sitting for many years prior to me owning it but it has a brand new mikuni on it. From memory I did get it going once with the mikuni fitted.
If I am getting spark at the spark plug does this indicate that I do not have any other issues with anything electrical? Electrics are my downfall!

try turning up the idle screw and checking the idle mixture. screw it in and back it out say a turn. Use the choke. If you can get it started then you can adjust the settings for the best idle.

Thanks guys,
I cleaned the carb (for the fourth time), checked the plug gap (which may have been whisker narrow) and set the idle screw and mixture as Doublethump suggested.
A friend suggested that sometimes the SR needs a really, really good hard kick to get it going. After a few serious kicks it started!
Oh that was a beautiful day!
thanks again

Well done mate! New carbs all need a slightly different starting routine..you'll learn it for yours and you'll be away... Now for the riding! SR
