Took a nice ride around the beach area, great morning ride untill I take off from a stop and, What the #@&%! stuck in first. Rode home seven miles, s l o w l y, on side streets, kids on bikes passing me, not so fun. So I'm wondering how major this is? Has anyone run across this problem? My clutch is adjusted fine, I checked it out. In my manuel it shows the shaft comes in from the shifter on the left and actuates the shift arm on the right. It looks like fingers meshing. I'm thinking maybe it is not engaging, there is some in and out movement of the shaft where it comes out of the case at the shifter. Well I'm unemployed, as construction here in San Diego has crawled to a stop, so I do have more time then money. So I'm going to attempt to fix this myself. My optomistic side says remove the pipe and the right side case cover and maybe fix it without removing the engine, all though thats probably wishfull thinking. If it is something major with the gears I'm afraid I would be hopelessly over my head.
Thanks in advance for any advice boys. Patrick

Explain how the lever feels when you try to shift up: Moving free or locked? In most of the cases this can be fixed without removing the engine from the frame.

Isn't there a spring that can commonly break inside the clutch cover? Shifter pawl spring, something like that? Thumperstuff has a reference to it on their SR parts page.

Well it doesn't move much, not at all down naturally as it is in first, and maybe 1/2 inch up. Doesn't feel normal at all, but no not locked up. Funny thing is when it happened I swear I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd and it some how fell into 1st. I let out the clutch and she revved up, and I thought This don't seem good how did I get into 1st. Thanks for the responses, I may start in on her tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

OK I finally had time to work on the SR. Fishing has been really good so I got a little distracted. Here is the bad news. The gear shift drum has six pins in the end of it which the changing pawl hooks onto and pulls to rotate the drum. Well one of my pins is gone and the holder has a piece cracked off. That in itself looked bad, but I was thinking, maybe if I find the pin in the oil pan I can slide it back in and replace the pin retainer and have someone weld a .......... so pull the oil pan and there is the pin, AND some other piece of metal. It appears to be part of the kick start mechanism, just by looking at my manuel it looks like half of the pawl guide plate. So, what the heck, maybe it broke off while starting and then caused the further damage? So much for the easy fix. Looks like the shift drum and the kick starter as well, need to come out. Uuuhhg!

Oh shit!
Yes, the broken thingie is from the kickstarter-ratchet release. No problem, just be careful when starting the bike: it can kick back now.
The broken selector-drum looks worse to me. You can try and reinstall the pin but I wouldn't bet it'll stay there for long. To change the drum you'll have to split the cases.
Good luck!

Hey Sven and everybody. Well I went the easy/hopefull route and slid that pin back in the shift drum, bent the metal holder back in shape and patched the metal with JB Weld. ( two part epoxy ) I've seen my Dad fix engine cases with it so I'm pretty confident it will hold. The cause of all this I believe, was that the C clip holding the shift rod where it exits the left side case broke and was missing. The shifter slid out enough for the gearchange arm and the gearchange quadrent (finger things)to slipped past each other. I also found that I lost alot of oil past the shaft at the oil seal. I probably broke the pin loose while foolishly jabbing at the lever with my boot while riding home. Oh well live and learn. I just got home from a twenty minute ride and she seems to be shifting better than ever. Halleluia!! Is that the word? Anyway just hand me a cold beer already.

I would have done the same, I think. It would certainly be a job to change out the drum.
