Has anyone had any experience with this? As I understand it, the clear lacquer applied over newly polished aluminum (engine covers and lower fork legs) tends to make the shine a bit "milky". Some say do without the lacquer and keep it clean and polish occasionally, and that will do the trick, but I'm wondering.............any opinions/experience?

My experience has been that a clear coat will dull the shine, but only slightly. For small obscure parts that would be hard to re-polish it may be the best way. I've had good results with Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic in a very thin coat. It's more durable than lacquer. A coat of wax will prolong oxidation on polished parts except on the engine. The problem with powder coating cast aluminum is "out gassing" that tends to bubble the coating when the metal is heated. My coater had to redo my engine covers three times in black. The covers were then warped due to repeated heating and required resurfacing.

So would that mean the stator and clutch cover would be no good powder coated?

I use Autosol polish on the bare alloy, engine covers included. The shine lasts for ages and it puts a protective film on the metal. It wears off with time, but is easy to bring back. The other thing with a clear coat is that it can discolour with heat and go yellowish...doesn't look so flash then... SR

Thanks to one and all for their input. I was seriously considering clear powder coating the polished parts when I take the frame, etc. in for its job.
Manxman: What fairing are you running? I'm planning to use a Eurobar in place of my stock bar and want a quarter fairing. Was thinking clip ons are just too low for this old body.
Suggestions anyone?

So would that mean the stator and clutch cover would be no good powder coated? It can be done, but not always easy. My stator cover was fine. The clutch cover was the problem child. It may be the porous metal absorbs oil and this is what surfaces during the heating process? Might be better to start with a brand new part if possible.

So would that mean the stator and clutch cover would be no good powder coated? Given the problems mentioned with that, I would just spray them what ever color you choose. I would spray them a number of thin coats and then polish. Just like you would with a fuel tank.
