Had a moment of madness - bought myself a road registered, running IT490. Yep, a piece of two stroke insanity. Dunno what came over me, but hey it was cheap - $750 with a spare back sprocket, a couple of main jets and a set of WR upside down forks thrown in for good measure. Took it for a highly illegal blast up the street, awesome. ;D Mate came around for a look and offered me a grand and a new alternator for my car, if I would let him have the bike. It runs on premix. I read somewhere that the safest ratio is 32:1, that being 32 parts sand one part cement poured into the spark plug hole and left to set. If anyone reckons an SR is hard to kick, they should have a go at kicking one of these mutants. Mick

You think it's hard to kick now! You'll have a fun time trying if you use that Pre-mix! I personally would hang on to it, they are a handful but also can be a lot of fun in the right hands. I.E. someone with a smooth right hand, very big balls and no fear or all of the above. Someone like myself!!! Curly

Mick,
Keep it!
I rode a few of the big bore IT Yamahas 425/465 back in the days when the were the japanese enduro weapon to have and the flew, I reckon it would make an absolute ball tearing Supermotad! They did have a reputation for breaking crankcase if the kicked back, so it is a case of kicking them like a big 4 stroke single.
Fuel oil ration is most dependant on the oil being used, non syntheticoils are normally run at 20:1 - 25:1, a good synthetic oli can be run from 32:1 up to 50:1. At 50:1 with a synthetic you won't seize, but the piston and rings (and bottom end bearings) will wear a fraction quicker than if ran with more oil.

Well you can't go wrong for that price.
For those with less experience of the two stroke variety above 100cc (that being me), would this be the equivalent of something like an XT with an 850 thumper in it, but lighter, and the power comes on full tilt when you find that sweet spot in the power band?
Hope you have somewhere to open her up.

Heh, heh...I used to race MX years ago and I raced a YZ465G for a couple of years during that time. Raced it at Pirie once or twice...You learn good throttle control with an open-classer or you end up in hospital... Great machines and great power...a machine to be respected. Always launch down on the kickstart and don't half kick it or you'll probably regret it. I used to run about 35:1 on Belray MC1...a little rich for MC1 but I didn't ever have any problems. I ran my 250's at about 47:1 on MC1. The big Yam MXers had a tendency to seize if you ran them too lean. Especially on the mile etc. where you run at wide throttle settings for a while. Have fun and wear good gear. SR

I do reckon I have somewhere to open her up. A couple of miles of nice flat beach at low tide. If anyone could volunteer a step by step starting guide, that would be cool. I intend to clean the carby, change the plug, flush the tank, and start with fresh 32:1 Premium unleaded and synthetic oil. It came with a manual for the YZ's. Would things like carb settings, jets, chain tensions, etc, be applicable? Mick

Yes a weapon like that could easily take the skin off your backside ! I should imagine the front wheel lifting in any gear on the powerband & being too frightened to want to start it after being kicked back by the sucker ! Get the lads together & have a policy of you can ride it but you gotta start it first( should give hours of entertainment I should think) I haven't even had any takers on my SR yet ! Worst bike I ever tried to kick was a 360Husky , bloody kicker was on the wrong side , finally got it going & the friggin gears & brakes were wrong too! give me the Yammy any day cheers Dave.

Dave,
The left hand kickstart on the husky's arn't that bad, but then I still have my 78 390 husky auto in the shed that I bought new in 1978, I have also had a variety of Bultaco over the last 30 years (and still hace 2 x 350 Sherpa T's) so I suppose it all about what you a used too.
If you want too get into the hardest bike to kick start my vote is for the SC500 Yamaha. A very little know early 70's Yamaha MX bike. These bastards were nigh on imposible to start if the timing was out (flywheel points ignition, so very difficult to set correctly) and once you got them start they tried to kill you with a "light switch" no power - full power powerband, but awesomely fast if you could hang on. I rode one ONCE, and have keep my promise never to do it again!

Mate for starting, just choke on, kickstart to the top on compression and launch down onto it with an MX boot on...should start easily. Don't 'girl thingy foot' it or it can be painful. Don't ever be scared of these things. SR

Yamaha IT patches on ebay:
Search no item no: 150180666557
Apparently they're quite rare. Is that because there weren't many of them, or anyone who rode one isn't around anymore.....

The beast lives!!!!!!! Cleaned the carby, threw out the 390 main jet and put a 410 in it. Set the air bleed screw on 2 turns out, set the throtlle slide stop so I could see about 2mm gap. New plug, new 30:1 premium unleaded and valvoline "racing 2 stroke oil", started 2nd kick, then nearly killed myself trying for a second start. Went inside, had a drink, watched a rock music DVD, went back out, started first kick. After a bit of experimentation, got the following routine down. Turn on fuel, leave choke off. Ease it over ONE compression, then get full bite on kicker and boot the sucker. Do not girl thingy foot around. Burned a litre doing circle work in front yard, then wife came out, told me off for all the noise and sent me and my oldest son out to rake the yard flat again. May register the bike for the annual toy run next weekend.... Mick
