I've looked high and low and haven't found anything.
When I got my bike, there were no side covers, no airbox, and only a piece of towel covering the air side of the carb. I'd like to put on a good air filter, as the area around my house is pretty dusty. Any suggestions?? Would I be best off getting a generic filter?? K&N??
What's the diameter for the intake, anybody know??

Man, I was hoping not to have to buy a caliper!! It's just the stock carb.. I found out today, interestingly enough, that a glass jar from my tomato sauce would fit PERFECTLY! Now, if it were only wire mesh instead of glass..

I recommend the K&N. Not because I've tried one, but because I tried a cheapo foam one on my XT. I'm sure it filtered out the rocks, but it also gave me a sever shock when it buirst into flames after a backfire.

Yes, K&N is the go...get one that is angled to the side a bit...clears everything better. Largish size so that it can breathe OK as well. SR

Well, I called my autoparts store and they can't get a 53mm.. would a 54 shrink down enough to do the trick?? I would think so, but I thought I would ask first..

I was going to mention that you really don't need anything as accurate as a vernier caliper to get the dimension you need. K&N filters are not that precise in there sizes. You can stretch or shrink them a few mm and they will be fine.

Just picked up a K&N RU-1700 for my street tracker, which has a VM34-168 carb. Filter is 3.5" diameter and 4" long, with a 20 degree bend on the clamp side, to clear the frame. Might want to double check with the parts store that you can get the filter with the correct (or closest) size inlet I.D.

Hi, There is a reason not to mount a mere K&N. The Step of diameters is too big. You get turbulences which contract the laminar entrance to the carb rapidly. For this reason it is better to have a trumpet which could be provided by Mikuni. The construction looks like the attached picture and works with good result. A filter is just necessary if you live in a dusty area. My Rat has an open trumpet and that is the best solution if you want to have less air restriction.
