Hello everyone. I was given a 1980 SR500 a few years back. I was told that it worked but wasn't instructed on how to start it. I has been sitting in my garage since. I was wondering if I could get some suggestions as to what I should do to get it running again. Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forum...there are a few topics here about the starting procedure of the SRs...have a look around the topics. If the bike is fine generally, then have a go at starting it. Drain the carby first perhaps to get rid of the old fuel and re-fill with good petrol...use the Prime position on the tap to re-fill... See what happens... SR

I know what you mean. When I was getting my bike to run, it started right up on the third kick, lucky. I did alll the stuff, checked for spark ,compression and fuel. Then after it ran for awhile the little bit** w0wouldn't fire. I finally got a Charlie horse in my leg from kicking it so much, got out my pit bike and conned my son into pushing the bike to start it. After it starting with a push I decided to go get a new spark plug for it. The new plug worked wonders, now when I go out to the garage, put the key in it, turn the ignition on, get the compression to the top of the kick stroke, release the compression (small lever on left handlebar) for about 2degrees of the stroke, then kick it---she starts the first time, every time. The bike is a blast to ride.

Excellent! It's usually the small things that cause the problems. Enjoy the machine...as of course I know you will. SR
