How small can I go on the rear sprocket before the chain contacts the mag wheel hub - my stock on is 44 - Rod

I think 41 is the smallest rear you can get. Maybe a 40.

42 if using standard 50 chain , or you can use 520 chain as on XT500 and use 40 teeth rear sprocket ,

I have a 40 on mine but I had 3mm deep and 3mm wide turned off the 6 mounting bosses on the sprocket carrier to clear the chain, you can do it with a big bastard file if your careful,
tried a 17 on the front but too high, came back to a 16 fantastic economy 75-80 MPG !!
