I'm doing the final engine assembly, and can't remember where this little spring came from. It is 12mm long and 10mm in diameter. My hunch is that it was part of the cam chain adjuster assembly, but neither my manual nor parts fiche shows it. I'm wondering if it is maybe a late model (SR400) addition that somehow ended up on my SR500. Anyone have a clue? Thanks.

It's too short and thick to be the cam chain tensioner spring. Looks like a clutch spring to me.

It is much smaller than a clutch spring. As a matter of fact, it fits perfectly into the recess on the end of the cam chain tensioner (the part that screws into the cylinder). This, and the fact that it was floating around in the same box as the cam chain tensioner, makes me think they belong together.
Have been all through the parts fiche, and can't find it. That is why I was thinking it might be an addition to a late model SR400 from Japan. My fiche is for the early US models. My bike appears to be a mix of parts from various years.

Where ever it goes, it will pass over a rod of some kind. You can see in the first photo where it is shiny inside the coils. In the second photo, it looks like the end has been hit repeatedly. It could very well go into the tensioner somewhere. The center rod in the tensioner would be about the correct diameter to pass through the center of the spring.

These photos show where I think it goes. What do you guys think? Thanks.
