Have any of you tried to wire a TT for street use? I'm taking delivery of a TT500 next week after the AMA mid-Ohio meet. It's complete and running but I'd like to try to put on some lights to make it street legal. Some of you may remember my earlier postings admitting to my 12v electrical shortcomings. Any info would be helpful.

The easiest way would be to use all SR electrics. The XT electrics, although smaller, lighter,cheaper, and simpler, are still only 6v. It would get you legal but, a 6v headlight will be rather dim at night. Just depends on what you want to do with the TT.

So do I need to plug in the wiring harness from an xt and I'm done? it sounds too easy. I assumed it would be an involved operation of magneto replacement etc.

The TT500's do have a lighting coil fitted as standard in their magneto assy.
In the 70's you could get an optional wiring harness and lighting set for them thru Yamaha. The wiring harness was very basis, just a headlight and taillight with a simple AC voltage regulator. From memory, there is a wiring diagram in the workshop manual for the TT500.

CJ Looking over my cheesy Haynes manual ( I do have the good Clymer too but, the Haynes was easier to get to ;D) C, D, & E model TT500's have a lighting coil with a Red/Yellow wire coming out. The F, G, & H models also have the lighting coil with a Red wire coming out. A simple rectifier to get it to DC current and a regulator to keep it from blowing bulbs and you should be good to go. I know....sounds too simple. And, probably isn't

If you only need a headlight and stop/tail light, there is no need to rectify the lighting coil output to DC, as lights don't care about the AC/DC issue.
You used to be able to buy a simple single wire (casing was the earth and required bolting to the frame) 6VAC regulator, and from the ever failing memory I think I still have a couple stuck in a box somewhere in my shed.
When I get home tonight I will check the diagram I have then scan and post it. CJ

The diagram in the manual only shows that there is a lighting coil and the ignition circuit, so I drew up the basic lighting diagram below. Notes about the above diagram: 1. the black wire connection the on/off switch to the Hi/Low switch is an internal link in the normal Yamaha trail bike switch block assembly. 2. The front brake light switch is optional and can be deleted if you only want to run with a switch on the rear brake. 3. The wiring colour is a random choice I made when drawing the circuit, you can use any colour wire you like/have. I have wired a complete bike using just black wire, but it is a bugger to fault find afterwards. Best of luck, hope this helps. CJ

THATS A GREAT DIAGRAM, I TOO AM GOING TO CONVERT MY '78 TT500 TO ROAD USE, BUT I WILL BE PUTTING IN A BATTERY, SO WOULD I JUST INSALL A 6VOLT RECTIFIER IN LINE WITH THE REGULATOR. WHAT SIZE FUSE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND, I WILL STAY WITH 6VOLT AS I WILL NEVER BE USING IT AT NIGHT. CHEERS FROM AUS.
