I'm keen to paint my engine except for the easy to polish parts and am after some experiences. I'm thinking of a mat black finish and am interested in the pot belly black paint from White Knight. Has anyone out there used it? Or any other products for that mater.
Does painting eventually just fall apart and look crap?
Thanks guys.

Hi, Here's one a several that Deus have done lately..they had another one done in crinkle black finish as well. I personally wouldn't paint one this way as they've painted the covers, screws etc. A recipe I feel for it to start falling off in a while...plus once you undo any screws the paint will probably come off as well. The standard SR cases were painted but the rest was either bare alloy or in the case of the side cases, lacquered over. There was a black 400 variant from Yamaha and it looked a lot like an XT engine minus the polished fin edges...see below... If you wanted a good job you'd have to disassemble the whole thing and do it properly in my opinion. Lot of work that would be time consuming. Not so bad if it's already apart. You need to prepare the surface and do everything meticulously to ensure that the paint adheres well...use a good quality engine paint or maybe the heat resistent black that you are talking about. SR

In 2000, when I rebuilt my TT500C, I painted the engine using VHT satin black paint. Prior to painting the parts, I had all of the parts beadblasted then I washed off all of the blasting dust using paint thinners. After painting and allowing the parts to air dry, I baked the parts in the kitchen oven (living by myself at the time) at 150C for a couple of hours. To get the highlighting on the fins, I just used a file to remove the paint from the edge of the fins.
The bike has been ridden off road a fair bit over the past few years and the paint is still holding up perfectly except where my boots rub on the clutch cover.

Hi Micky, recently i did a top end re-build and after giving the the barrel a thorough washing in the dishwasher [put 2 soap tablets in for a serious de-grease ] I then used a spray tin of black gloss hammerite and gave it 3 coats,it looks really good and has held up with no problems at all.You can put all your ali engine parts in the dishwasher and then give them a final polish,a mate of mine who's been in the trade umpteen years put me onto the method and has cleaned more bikes than I've had hot dinners,go for it, you wont be dissapointed.
Regards,Andy

You could do it with White Knight Pot Belly black. Worked for me on my quicky XT rebuild. It has held up very well, and the paint does not crack off when I undo the screws. My bike had been painted with some flat black crap. So I plugged the crankcase breather, the oil line holes and the exhaust and intakes, etc. I got a tin of the gel type paint stripper, brushed it in well, then blew the whole lot off with my pressure washer. Blew the water off with the air hose, left it to dry for a couple of days then sprayed it with a couple of tins of pot belly black. The big attraction to me? This paint is specifically designed to radiate heat. Can't be a better idea for an aircooled engine, eh? It ain't as glossy as the original yammy paint but I like it. Mick

I remember hearing they had some problems with the japanese made ones. I wonder if you can access the sump plug from there?
That engine painting is... interesting!

I got to say but that gold engine looks bloody silly...... But thats just me.... Paint everything? Was funny when I thought about the dish washer engine clean. I was thinking 'What a good idea' but my girlfriend just looked at me with a weird look on her face. I don't think she understands....
