Very illegal mate.
You haven't got much of a chance getting a slip for it, and the odds you'll get a canary are fairly high.
But it's your bike, go for it!

i saw some stupid choppers (not all choppers are stupid, these ones were) with side plates in Sydney on saturday - but they were at teh back of teh bike, just off teh rear fender and of curse facing backwards
Maybe there's a loop hole?

Milkman, Try having a look at this site; www.dotars.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/index.aspx There should be a vehicle standards bulletin listing the requirements for motorcycles. I have down loaded one from the Transport SA, which is our equivelant to the NSW RTA, but dotars is supposted to have the standards for all vehicles in Aust. In many cases, like my brother in Broken Hill with his Harley, who puts a legal taillight / number plate assy on for his annual inspection the changes to his "normal" taillight assy beside the rear wheel when he gets back home. The cops don't seem to care, and I am sure the guy who does the inspection knows what is happening. CJ

Thats was Col's info, but no problem
I think you said you only just got your license Wenley? Well if you ride around with L or P plates on I'd keep it as legitimate as possible - those things are like red rags to a bull when Highway cops see them
The RTA hadn't processed my full licence approval properly, so the system said i was on my P's. A month ago a copper who was behind me at the lights pulled me over said i was speeding - which i denied (we were sitting at the lights), he then told me it was on his camera - no - so he finally went back to his car, came back and said "no, i pulled you over for an RBT - but you're carrying a pillion and no P plates so thats 3 pts and 2pts and that bikes too big, so thats some more and about $900 in fines so far"
Thats was the first time in 2 years to be pulled over on my bike (plenty of legitimate reasons in that time) but he went nuts. Maybe because he was an angry red headed highway patrolman with no partner (surprise) and was bored?
I'd wouldn't do anything that stands out until you get full points
