Hello All, I have a 78 SR500 thats giving me some trouble. The bike is hard starting and when it is running is slightly slow to return to idle, backfires out the intake side below 3000 RPM's. Cam timing is right on, I have checked for air leaks on the intake and exhaust sides of the motor and found nothing, the intake manifold/gasket, carb gaskets and diaphragms are all brand new. If anyone has any incite let me know. Also was wondering about the adjustment of the enrichener pump rod. Anyone know what the proper adjustment is for that thing?
Thanks,
Kyle...aka Keelay

This is something that I think needs to be addressed a little further. I can't seem to find a decent explanation on how to adjust the rod either. Maybe some of the seasoned forum members can help out with this one.

Heh, heh...possibly because you have discovered that not many of us have found a decent explanation for it ourselves ...might be worth pursuing to see if someone does actually know. I have pulled the linkage apart many times over the years to replace parts including the rods themselves and simply screwed it back up again. I am not convinced that the rod is actually adjusted to suit anything at all. I know I usually run with the pin in the centre hole at the bottom, but I have run with it in the other holes with no noticable effect I can recall. Other than that I am not sure there is much around about it. In my opinion these carbs are unncessarily complex and are a pain when they go wrong. Especially the 32mm ones for some reason, well in my experience anyway. The E's should have a 34mm. When they're running well they're great....however there are many carbs around that are far less complicated and work better. I have an aftermarket Mikuni accel pump that is meant to go onto a VMS carby. Not available any more I think...It attaches to the bowl screws and is operated by a dual cable arrangement that is spliced into the throttle cable. I will eventually fit that to a round slide to have a play...and probably unnecessarily complicate a very simple and reliable carby... ;D SR

Just got a shop manual for '76-'79 XT/TT/SR's and it doesn't say much about the Accelerator pump. Has a small picture showing the passages and how it works, but says nothing about adjusting it, other than to put the cotter pin in the middle hole. I'd say do away with the SR carb and go with a XT carb.
