After now completely rebuilding a '78 and looking to purchase a second one that is 40 miles from me. I would say $1400 to $1600. The dent is a MAJOR issue for me. To repair the dent and repaint is a minimum or $300 to have it done. The one thing I would check if I were looking to buy your bike is the front forks. The one was considering looked very nice ('79 with 3700 miles) had pitted and rusted front fork tubes. The damage was small, but would destroy fork seals within just a few miles. Also, to add insult to injury, if you live in the U.S. our economy is so bad, sales of everything is poor. I was just watching a car auction were a '69 Camaro SS396, 4spd, 4:11 rear end (all original) sold for $25,500. One year ago that car would have brought over $40,000. Good Luck! Here is a '78 for sale on E-bay that you can watch: cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=180263458660

It's weird, though - some places bring a ton more for motorcycles than others. A motorcycle here in Indiana tends to bring double the price of the same motorcycle in Ohio, where my parents live..

I know here in Asheville,NC bike prices are real high. I figure it's because of the great riding we have here in the mountains. I can go 100-150 miles in most any direction and save 25%-50%. I never look for bike locally, I'll look at Charlotte,NC, Knoxville,TN, or Greenville,SC.
When I went to the middle of the state around Winston/Salem area to get my TT roller for my SR, the guy had a FT500 Honda Ascot for $950.00. Nice and clean. It was worth the price. I almost bought it, not because I wanted it but because I knew I could bring it back and get at least $1500.00 for it here. Alas, it was the weekend and I didn't have that much cash on me.
I guess the whole point is that no matter what anyone may say what it's worth, it would only really apply to the area they live in. I'm sure some answers will get you in the ballpark but, get a feel for the bike prices in your area.
