I'm having troubles getting my carb dialed in after removing the stock air box and K&N and replacing it with a K&N pod filter. I started with the stock #25 pilot jet, 320 main jet, and the clip on the needle in the stock location. I tried a couple different pilots and it now has a #45 pilot and the clip on the needle has been moved down one notch. It runs better than it did after the filter installation with no jet changes. There is still a slight bog off idle with the enrichiner closed but seems to go away with it slightly open. It also has a hard time idling with it closed. This sounds like too small a pilot but I figured a 45 was big enough. Oh, before I forget I have the 1.75" pipe with a Supertrapp. What does everyone else run for jetting with a similar setup?

I had to go down to a #20 pilot jet and up to a #330 main with essentially the same setup you have. The slide has also been cut per the Minton Mods. I also had to put 12 discs in the Supertrapp. Oops,I still have the K&N in the original airbox. No pod filter www.siue.edu/~rsutton/SR/carbmod.htm

I've read about the Minton mods and just don't feel like messing with the original carb. I have a couple XT carbs around I might try. Or I could steal the vm34 roundslide off the street tracker. But i'd rather try to get it jetted right.

I didn't have a choice as the slide was cut before I bought the bike. I bought an unmolested carb cheap that I have as a backup. It took me a little while to get it all running right but it runs and starts great now. Milage could be better though (about 40mpg.)

40MPG I'm around 60-65 mpg. That's mixed in town and highway.

I know! But it was even worse before I started tinkering with the carb. 33-35mpg. Well at least gas is cheap

Are the XT slides the same as the SR slides? Maybe I could just steal the slide from the XT carb, cut .050" off and put it in the SR carb. And I was only getting from 45-50mpg before I started messing with the airbox and carb.

I haven't kept track but, it seems like the people that are getting sub 50mpg are using the stock carb. My 60+ is with a 38mm Mikuni, Supertrapp muffler, stock cam, ported head, 540 Wiseco at 9:1 comp. I wonder if there is something with the pump that is doing this to the mileage? Jetting is similar to what I have in the 38mm Mikuni. Just a thought.

How do you go about setting the pump correctly anyways? I think I might just try switching all the jets and needle settings on the XT carb to match the SR carb and then start tuning. I can do the Minton mods to the XT carb if needed.

I noticed when riding around today that it only bogs if you crack the throttle, but if you roll into it slowly, it seems to work just fine.

Mine's the same way. You roll on slowly and it takes it up just fine, but if you open it quickly it bogs out.
I've noticed that if I open it any more than half throttle then it bogs out as well. I'm running a 36mm Mikuni but I dont know what jets are in it. What have the rest of you found with the 36mm Mikuni that runs nicely so that you can get a full power band out of it?

Ok, I think I have it figured out. I decided to put the XT carb on. 45 pilot, 320 main, needle clip moved down 2 from stock. I forgot to check if its the stock needle, so I will assume it is. I can crack the throttle and it go's like it should!

Well, I pulled my mikuni 36mm carb apart.
Pulled the main jet out, and pulled the air jet on accident cuz I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff.
Then I realized that the pilot jet appears to be cracked right near the orifice... but strange thing is... I cant get the dang thing out! There doesn't appear to be a scored slot on it for unscrewing it. And I've got a Mikuni Carb & parts manual here, but it shows the pilot as having the slot... So I'm not sure what's up with that.
Unfortunately, I put the main jet and the air jet in an envelope, intending to buy a magnifying glass cuz I couldn't read the markings on the dang things... then somehow they fell out and became lost in the abyss that is known as my truck. *facepalm*
Ok,.... here's what I'm asking.
Did mikuni make a 36mm smoothbore carb with a press-fit unchangeable pilot jet? If not...how do I get it out?
Also... What are good sizes to go with to try replacing the main jet and the air jet?
The Needle clip is currently on the third slot.
How does this all related to tuning with the Muzzy muffler I've got on there right now?
If you guys wanna email me, its syberphish@yahoo.com Cell number is (661) 916 4703
I'm tryin to get this thing goin so I can use it for my college classes (free parking at the front of the lot for bikes) but I'm havin some trouble. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Is this your carby? A smoothbore is a different carb...can be similar looking but different inside. What parts are you missing? SR
