Okay, I've searched high and low to no avail..
Can somebody walk me through the oil system on the SR500?? I've found little snippets here and there (add a line to something or other) but nothing real specific.
I'm pretty certain that oil is added just below the handlebars, but where does it drain?? If I were to guess that the oil filter is beneath the black cap on the kick side of the engine, would I be right?? What kind/how much oil do I need?? And that gurgling that comes out when I run the kick lever by hand, is that oil in the crankcase? Do I need to drain that somehow??
Clue me in!!

That post you linked to is great, SR!! I didn't check many of those posts out, as most of the other vehicle-based forums tend to get into a shouting match about what kind of oil is best..
Okay, so the bolt on the front of the frame, just above the skid plate is the frame drain - got that..
It sounds like the big black plug is the engine drain, then?? In that case, where's the oil filter?? I saw someone online selling a strainer, too, and it looks like the TT/XT has one - does the SR?? If so, where is that?? Should it be serviced as well??
According to the shop manual, I need 2(ish) liters of oil, 20W40 - should be right, I suppose, and I have a case from my old bike so that's good..
Anything else I need to know?

The large plug in the sump is the engine drain...the screen is above the sump cover. If it hasn't been done for a while I'd remove the sump cover and clean it. You'll need a gasket. You may find a piece of curved, flat metal in there...that's be the kick spring guide. They break every now and again. If you do there are posts on what to do there too. To drain the filter housing remove the lower screw and pull it out. That lets the oil out from the filter housing. Read the other post for the little 'tricks' to save putting oil everywhere. Make sure you replace all of the plugs before finishing. Put in a new filter and 2 litres of oil. Start the bike and re-check the level...fill to suit the dipstick. SR

Just don't do what I nearly did when I first got my bike. There is a largeish slotted plug over on the leftside underneath of the engine about in line with the gear change shaft. It was the first thing I saw when I crawled around the bike the first time I changed the oil. I got as far as finding a big screwdriver to fit it when I thought "Nah, no one uses a slotted screw for a sump plug." Turns out its the detent for the selector shaft. Good thing I took a second look, and found the sump plug on the second go. Mick

Well, I found the oil filter part easily enough! I wanted to change the oil before I washed the bike, figuring that it would be a good idea to get it messy before I got it clean. I went and looked and finally saw something rising through the grime, and when I rubbed it it said "FILTER", so I guess I'm good there!!
Now I just have to wheel it over to the shop and get to work!
