Hi all, I am about to get a rebore (1980 sr500). The problem that I face is that I can not get hold of a 9:1 compression piston as this is the standard compression. I am faced with fitting a 10:1 piston in it.
The question is, are they still easy to kick over and ride around town on? Has any one fitted a 10:1 piston and what did they think of it, any problems or benefits?

If you are wanting to lower the compression from the 10:1 to something closer to 9:1, I would suggest getting a thicker head gasket from Thumper Stuff. Get one of the solid copper ones that you can reuse.

I thought Thumperstuff had 9:1 OEM or Wiseco pistons

They do, or should have. He may be out of stock. I was just going on what he said ,"The problem that I face is that I can not get hold of a 9:1 compression piston".
One benefit from using a thicker head gasket is you can always go back with a thinner one and bring the compression back up.

Kicking it over with a 10:1 is not a problem. I have a 10:1 in mine.

Same with 11 to 1, no problem at the right point of the stroke, Yamaha do a piston for the 400 which has more comp than the 500 and fits in, sometimes I use them in road engines, ask your yamaha dealer, and you can bore them tighter than forged pistons as well.
