I have learned so much about SR's from this forum, that I feel compelled to keep everyone else posted on my project, and the lessons learned from it.
First off, I am VERY excited to make my 79 into a cafe racer proper. Secondly, I am excited to the changes that seem rather necessary to me.
As an amateur roadracer, the first thing we always do is the basic conversion, first: steel braided lines and suspension upgrades. From there, we put together ergonomics. That's when I realized the main weakness on this bike is its subframe.
The "sub's" on these old bikes play a much bigger role in the bikes functionality than new ones. The subframe on these "go down" from the tank, rather than up, like on modern bikes. The reason for this is ground clearance. To get proper ground clearance on a sport bike, the footpegs have to be brought up and back to keep them from dragging the ground in a turn. I quickly realized that the only way to get proper clearance for the footpegs was to get proper rearsets. But, that would have my large "keester" sitting on my calves and at leat 2 inches in the air above the seat. The only proper way to raise the seat, is to raise the subframe. But, since the shocks on these old scooters are attached to the subframe, that means longer shocks! I spoke with the good people at IKON, and they said they could manufacture the shocks any way I needed (for a reasonable price too, compared to modern bikes, anyway!) So much for new shocks . . . I have a subframe to modify.
So, spoke with Joh and Dan at JEMCO to make an exhaust system for this beast. Dan is a former west coast roadracer, and understands that you can not turn right on this bike due to exhaust clearance issues (because I want to road race this thing, too!). I asked about a specially "turned up" exhaust that would give me the clearance I need to race. He simply said, "No problem, just bring me the design of your rearsets, and I can build around it!" It always comes back to rearsets, doesn't it?
Oh well, back to the rear set postings . . .

Two suggestions:
Don't use Konis or Ikons for racing. At every gtf-event I've seen at least two or three pairs of them fail. Rod broken or loose, sudden loss of all oil etc.
Most aftermarket SR-rearsets are much too wide. You gain a lot of height if you fit them closer to the bike.

For your pipe run it straight down and under the engine...bring it out the side behind the pegs and up...depends on the length you are after as to what happens then. SR

So, I have decided to start cutting on the bike! I started with the passenger pegs. Then removed the chrome fender. From there, it was time to cut the subframe. After much input from the good people here at the forum as well as the techs from the Yamaha dealership where I work on the website, part time. www.ksmotorsports.comSo, I decided to cut it, this way: First, the stock sub frame, before I cut it: Since I did not cut the subframe off, I just cut off the "unnecessary" part of the subframe. I learned a couple of things from the cut. check it out, here:

Hey Micky V,
Don't know where the pics are . . . I posted EXACTLY as that silly little picture that Stew Ross sent me. I have event tolerated the ABSURD practice of having to join the VERY WORST of all web mails, YAHOO . . . just so I could join FLICKR, where I have posted those pictures, and then stuck the link into the message as Stew's picture kinda showed.
Stew, why is the method for posting pics on this forum done so poorly? Why is the explanation even worse than the method?
My experience in sharing my SR project has been unacceptably bad. Please fix it.

Stew, why is the method for posting pics on this forum done so poorly? Why is the explanation even worse than the method? My experience in sharing my SR project has been unacceptably bad. Please fix it. Hey Tank, Stew is trying to help you. Posting pics is extremely easy. You did not do it as the excellent tutorial provide by Solo2racr indicates, or else your pics would be visible. When all else fails, use the SEARCH button and read all the posts on the subject of posting pics... works great. So here it is again, once more from the top. This is the basic way: Have your pics hosted somewhere on the web. Use tinypic.com if you want. No charge, no membership, couldn't be easier to upload. Also, photobucket.com, flickr.com etc... After uploading your pic, copy the url of the pics. Open a post here. Paste the url of your pic in your post. Put the img tags on each end manually. Or, highlight your url by holding the left button on your mouse and running it over the url of your pic. Then, click the image button which is the fourth button from the left. That would be the fourth button after the YouTube, arrow and url buttons. The img tags should be at each end of your url. They look like this minus the spaces: [ i m g ] put your url here [ / i m g ] If you used flickr already, look at the url they provide you. They are notorious for not having a .jpg at the end of the url. Try adding that to what you may have already tried. If you still cannot get them to show, email them directly to me and I will be happy to do it for you. Hope this helps, G Man edit: Going back to your flickr photo album, here is the way to extract a .jpg url for your pic. Click on a pic from your album Then click the all sizes button just at the top left of the pic. Then click the medium button above the pic. Then right click your mouse on the medium pic. A box should come up, click on properties. Another box will come up. Look where it says location and copy the url there. This will be an appropriate url with the .jpg that you require to paste between the [/ i m g] tags.

Hi, Gman, I've actually been thinking of driving to Ontario just fot the toutorial on putting pictures on this site. It's just one of the few things (to my frame of mind) that's either memeory loss or difficult to remember how to do. Actually a while ago you offered to post some pictures to me. As an example I just printed your last message & it came out blank, God, she is mad at me once again. Actually I think New Brunswick& the Cabot Trail next Week. Thanks for the patience of being there DaveWFC

You can get the URL from Flickr with .jpg on the end very easy. It's just knowing where it is. I found it simply be reading the instructions at Flickr. Click on the thumbnail pic of the pic you want to post. When the larger pic comes up, you will see a box just above that says "All Sizes". Click on it. The next window you get will have the full URL w/ .jpg on the bottom of it. I have explained this in another thread as well. The "search" function here works very well for researching something that has been asked before. Posting photos here is the same as MANY other message boards. No harder and no easier. No worries. Some people are just more computer tech savvy than others. Edit.... I just pulled up the HTML of this thread in the hopes I could retrieve a URL of the pics you wanted to post. I saw the URLs for all the sigs and all the avatars but, no URL for the pics you were trying to post. Was hoping to help ya out but to no avail.

Once using Tanks flickr url modified correctly and once using the tinypic site.
