I have a line on an 81xt original owner, I an interested in it but have a few questions about the 6volt electrics. Is it possible to convert it to 12 volt? I looked up that it is a cd ing. Is it possible to run a battery eliminator on it? How have others adapted the xt for mostly road use? Thanx in advance Rick

I am currenty competing in the SA Reliability Trial Championship on one of my XT500C's that I converted to a 12v electrical system (too get better lights) by basically fitting a SR500 flywheel, stator, regtifier/regulator, CDI and ingnition coil and adapting the stock XT wiring loom to suit.
Here in South Australia, there is also a company that rewinds both XT and TT stator plates for 12 volts with power ratings up to 200 watts, but they won't be much good to someone in the US. But it is possible to rewind the stator, and fit an apropriate regulator etc.
