Hey there, I recently bought an sr. It was sitting for about 8 years with some new metzlers. They have hardened up a bit. After fighting them for a while I got them on the rim(with tubes). Now I cant get them to lock on to the rim. Will a strap help with this? Any Ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

If the bead just isn't seating , lots of soapy water or dedicated tire lube around the bead. If they aren't inflating at all you pinched the tube.

Get the tire warm by setting it out in the sun. Heat is magic when it come to mounting tires. In the winter I use a propane bullet heater, or if I had too even a blow dryer. Then use lots of soapy water (Many drops of dish soap in an old windex bottle) spray liberally. Feel free to pump it up to 45 or 50 lbs until it seats. Once the bead pops on let the air back down to 30psi or so.

Thanks Chris Tires that are 8 years old are no good since the rubber goes bad after about 4 years! Throw them out and get some new tires so you won't kill yourself when they blow out!

Please tell me that Steve and I misread this, and you are not trying to mount 8 year old tires on a motorcycle.

Yea, what they said about 8 year old tires.......
I have used WD-40 for years to lube the tire bead during both removing and installing the tire on the rim. The stuff is super slippery on rubber and dries and leaves no residue in just a few minutes. Careful around the disc brakes, though.
Water and soap works pretty good, too, but leave a residue that must be cleand off.

You have read this correctly. The tires are/were brand new 8+ years ago. They have been sitting in storage with the bike for a while... I figure they would be better than the 28 year old tires I just took off of it. If I buy new metzlers they might cost more than I paid for the bike. However I am getting frustrated and will probably be buying some new tires and paying someone to mount them. Any suggestions? Im looking for a newer more aggressive tread than stock but wont be pushing it too hard.(cheap is good too) Thanks

When you get your new tires, give it another go mounting them yourself. New tires will be much more flexible than the 8 year ones.
