I've been on the lookout for an SR500, but happened on this '76 XT500 at a yard sale yesterday for $20 with a clear title! ;D It's a common vintage bike story. Carb problems, owner removes carb, never fixes it, parts are lost, and it just sits. Kinda rusty, and a few missing bits, but the engine turns freely. I'm thinking of going in a more street friendly direction with it, maybe street tracker or supermoto, but just gathering info now, and looking forward to learning about these bikes. Here it is today after a wash.

That's an excellent deal, you'll have to remember this. It could be you best take ever. It's acrually in nice shape to begin with. Good luck Dave

I did some mock-up to get an idea of how I want to do it. This is a spare Suzuki front end and 19" wheel that I have. I'm working on getting a matching 18" rear rim, and I think these will look great painted, and also give the bike decent brakes. I'm thinking of sort of a cafe'/flat track hybrid. I'll start a thread on it once I really get going on it.

Looking good so far. I am building up a similar project on the same XT frame, slightly modified. The wheels are custom made 17" and the suspension is a combination of late 80's and early 90's XT250 and XT350. The whole bike is currently stripped down for the final welding on the frame prior to painting. CJ

Welcome!
I'm laughing (at myself? or all of us??) as I just recently picked up a '79 XT to keep my '78 SR company!!! Not as good a deal as yours, but completely original from the original CDN owner - even has the "factory" rack!
SLS front brake is certainly, ah, exciting in a hard stop on the street...............6v electrics on the other hand, don't excite anything!!

I figured out that these bikes are rather addictive! ;D I did get most of the work done on the rear brake on mine. I had to cut out a frame bracket to fit the master cylinder, so need to make a new one to reinforce that area. I think I'm about 1/4" off on sprocket alignment, so will have to get that sorted. Then will be exhaust and making a seat/tail section for it. I hope to be ready to blast and paint the frame in a month or two.
