Had a 130 mile ride this Sunday and boy did I have an aching arse. I recall the same issue on my old XS850. When I used to ride bicycles a lot, I didn't have the same problem. Bicycle seats are very narrow and are designed so that your pelvis bones support your weight at the rear of the bicycle seat. Once you get your "calluses", no discomfort even though your legs are constantly working. Motorcycle seats are much larger, yet seem more uncomfortable. Anyone have any insights as to why this is? Anyone ever see motorcycle seats designed like bicycle seats?

I know the SR doesn't have the cushiest saddle, but the more bikes I ride, the more people I talk with, the more I learn that most any seat on a motorcycle just isn't good for more than about 100 miles. I find that most riders like to get off, walk, stretch, etc... after about that mark.

haven't seen motorcycles with bicycle seats - motorbikes are a bit wider
If you just sat on a bicycle seat without pedalling etc for 100 miles, i think you'd not be feeling the greatest

For a long trip I fit a piece of sheepskin onto the seat. 100% better than the seat alone! Your rear end will thank you! See below...hmm, looking at that sign in the background, the price of fuel has gone up about 35 cents a litre since then! SR

You're right sjef I was being more literal regarding thin bike seats, as opposed to the saddle style seats on choppers etc
35c cheaper Stew! Thats a weekly change isn't it?

If you think SR seats are hard try a new Triumph, you pay a lot of money and you may as well take the seat off and sit on the frame

The closest thing to a bicycle seat is a KTM! KTM is famed for having the hardest, most uncomfortable seats in the world and for some reason those crazy Austrians don't seem to want to address the problem! I regularily do trips to Baja where we ride 150+ miles/day of singletrack for four to five days in a row. Usually after one of these rides I have a SEVERE case of monkeybutt and can't sit down for a week! I don't know about the rest of you guys, but my SR seat seems like a Lazyboy recliner compared to my KTM seat!
LOVE my KTM, though ;D

"trips to Baja where we ride 150+ miles/day of singletrack for four to five days in a row"......Sore butt or not, that sounds like heaven to me. Enjoy it while you still can.

Interesting comments,I ride regularly with a couple of mates, ones got a sr the other a 500 enfield bullet. How many miles you do in a day is down to the terrain mainly,we generally agree that an hour in the saddle is about right befor a short break to sort your rear end out and also keeps the concentration levels up.In the past I've done 300miles plus in a day [on a w650 kwak]certainly didnt enjoy the latter parts due to a bit of tiredness creeping in. The softer a seat, the sweatier it is, and the more flesh is touching it.
I find hard seats more comfy !
At 150 km i started to love the ride and didn't want to stop !
Soft seats make a bucket in the rain,.........thats no fun !
